Working under Dr. Jeffrey Tyner, combined molecular and computational biology to identify the mechanism and functional importance of colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF1R) in acute myeloid leukemia. Identified a cell subpopulation that establishes a supportive microenvironment for leukemia cell growth that is eliminated by adding CSF1R-specific inhibitors, suggesting a possible new therapy for treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML).Additional projects included: (1) demonstrating the synergistic combination of CPX-351, a lysosome-encased combination of cytarabine/daunorubicin, and FLT3-specific inhibitors in AML patients with FLT3-ITD mutations; (2) developing an automated decision tree to evaluate the impact of genetic mutation co-occurrence in determining AML prognostic risk; and (3) isolating and characterizing mesenchymal stromal cells from AML patients in different prognostic risk categories.

Working under Dr. Jonathan Keats, helped characterize all commercially available multiple myeloma cell lines through tissue culture and microarray/sequencing analysis. Also investigated a mechanism of dexamethasone resistance in multiple myeloma through gene expression analysis in drug-resistant and -sensitive cell lines.

Working under Glen Weiss, examined miRNA and gene expression patterns in drug-resistant lung cancer cell lines and patient samples. Interned as a Helios Scholar in 2010 and developed a predictive computational model of the interactions among hedgehog signaling pathway proteins under normal and disease conditions.
