I am currently the accounting manager for several small businesses: a data wholesaler, and a real estate holding company. In the current economic environment, companies need to know to how pivot and be flexible, and should be looking for team members who know how to do the same. My story demonstrates my flexibility and ability to learn and develop different skills in order to be of the most value to my employer.For about fifteen years, I worked in hotels and about 13 of those in some form of hotel management. I started just before the 2008 housing crisis, and saw some of my colleagues lose their jobs. I was able to keep my job through that recession, but was not as fortunate during the pandemic. My role over the years had changed, and I was working as the general manager for a boutique hotel that was driven by tourism. When people quit traveling, ownership decided to shut the hotel down until things improved. As part of this shut down, they let the staff go, including management.Rather than return to hotel management, I decided to look for a more “recession-proof” career, where I found my current role. I started taking classes at the local community college in accounting to supplement my education in communications and finance from about 20 years ago. As I have learned more, my role within the organization has expanded and recently was asked to be the accounting manager and our "sister company."My background in hospitality has enabled me to be very observant and address the small-but-important details. While noticing a light bulb that is out may not be valuable in my current role or a future role, that detail has translated into making reports I create not only be accurate but also look professional and engaging. Working with limited resources has made me a creative problem solver, and being in hospitality has made me a customer service super-star in an accounting industry that is not thought of as being a leader in service.
