Human Resources Manager

Brisbane, Australia

TRL provides global logistical support to government agencies and defence forces in locations such as Africa (DRC), the South Pacific (East Timor & the Solomon Islands), Indian Ocean Territories and Australia. Diverse service offerings include helicopter and airports operations and security, facilities management, mobile camps & fuel logistics.• Generalist HR management role with responsibilities across the full spectrum of the function.• Challenging communication & development scenarios as a result of the geographic & cultural diversity of the business.Achievements- Solved legacy issues saving the organisation $420k as a result of incorrect leave accruals and allowances. This had come about due to poorly worded Employment Contracts and inconsistent payroll processing for up to 6yrs. Each matter was individually addressed and where agreement could not be reached, dealt with via Unions, the Fair Work Commission or Ombudsman.- Reshaped the relevance of the HR function from one which was not trusted, and not inherently involved in business activities. I ‘sold’ the value-add of involving HR by proving where it could assist in avoiding unnecessary risk and focusing on what could be done, rather than on what could not.- Led the successful TRL implementation of a Toll Group-wide HRIS (an $18m investment). This required Line Managers who believed the business was ‘so different’ that Group policies and procedures were not applicable, to not only become compliant, but take responsibility for initiating and processing people matters that they had come to rely on HR to do.- Given the geographically diverse nature of the business, I undertook a series of ‘HR Lunch & Learn’ presentations that I videoed, edited and made available via a private Vimeo site. These covered contemporary HR issues such as employment law, internal procedures, bullying/harassment and performance management etc.

School Of Veterinary Science - Gatton, St Lucia & Other Clinic Locations

Highly respected tertiary level institution located on the University’s Gatton campus west of Brisbane. Offers under-graduate, post-graduate and research programs.Projects focused on the changing culture which had arisen from the relocation of the School, and the change of Faculty under which the School is managed. - Leadership & Management development - Performance & Change Management - Business process optimisation & planning - Roster modelling & cost analysis (24/7 clinics & emergency centres) - Policy & procedure implementation - Award & Enterprise Agreement audit & compliance - Organisational structure, position analysis, design & recruitment - Intranet developmentAchievements- Facilitated the Annual School Planning Retreat, which unlike previous years did not result in ambiguous outcomes and frustrations because it was simply a ‘talk-fest’. I focused participants on identifying the priority issues, allocating ‘champions’ and agreeing to timelines.- Developed a roster model and costings to establish a 24/7 presence at the Small Animal Clinic and Equine Hospital. The University’s EBA had not envisaged these working hours, which led to the need for an additional veterinarians and nursing staff, with an annual labour budget of $1.3 million.- Developed and implemented a formal organisational structure for the School as it had previously had none resulting in ambiguity of responsibilities and inefficient business processes. This was achieved by working closely with the Head of School and the School Manager.
