Advisor: Professor Emmanuel GiannelisThe objective of the project was to design responsive tracer particles that can provide information about the environment in an oil well. The main challenge is to create particles with colloidal stability that can withstand the high salinity of the injection fluids, and the high temperature within the oil well. To that end, I developed a miniemulsion polymerization technique that produces uniform fluorescent polystyrene particles (diameter < 100 nm) which exhibit enhanced colloidal stability in high salinity and high temperatures. These particles were characterized by electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, zeta potential and fluorescence spectroscopy.
