About David Lat

I'm the author of Original Jurisdiction, a newsletter on the Substack platform about law and legal affairs, and I write a column for Bloomberg Law. My work has also appeared in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post, among other publications. I speak to law firms and corporate legal departments at firm-wide or company retreats, partner retreats, summer associate gatherings, diversity celebrations, and other events.Prior to launching Original Jurisdiction in December 2019, I founded and served as managing editor (2006-2017) of Above the Law ("ATL"), a widely read and award-winning website about the legal profession that reaches more than 1.5 million unique visitors a month. Prior to ATL, I launched Underneath Their Robes, a popular and buzz-generating blog about federal judges that I wrote under a pseudonym. Before entering the media world, I worked as a federal prosecutor, a litigation associate at Wachtell Lipton Rosen & Katz in New York, and a law clerk to Judge Diarmuid F. O’Scannlain of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. I graduated from Regis High School, Harvard College, and Yale Law School, where I served as an editor of the Yale Law Journal. My first book, Supreme Ambitions: A Novel, was published in 2014. According to the New York Times, “for an elite niche — consisting largely of federal judges and their clerks — Supreme Ambitions has become the most buzzed-about novel of the year.”If you're interested in learning more about my writing or speaking services, please don't hesitate to reach out. Founder
Original Jurisdiction Dec 2020 - Present
I'm the founder and sole writer of Original Jurisdiction, a newsletter/blog and podcast focused on law and the legal profession. Original Jurisdiction aspires to be a source of incisive, fair-minded, and occasionally entertaining commentary about law and the legal profession. Given the undeniable importance of law and the legal profession in American society and politics, for better or worse, and as the legal industry continues to expand in size and scope, for better or worse, it’s more important than ever to have outlets offering insight into these often insular and mysterious worlds. As I analyze complex and controversial legal issues and delve deep into the latest trends and events in the legal profession, I don’t pretend to be objective; like everyone else, I have my biases. But I always strive to be fair-minded, acknowledging the different sides to an argument or controversy. And I always strive to be civil, treating other perspectives and understandings with respect. For more about Original Jurisdiction, please see the (extremely detailed) About page:https://davidlat.substack.com/about?utm_source=menu-dropdownIf you're interested in subscribing, you can do so through this page:https://davidlat.substack.com/p/all-rise-an-announcement-about-originalThank you for your interest and support!
