I'm the founder and sole writer of Original Jurisdiction, a newsletter/blog and podcast focused on law and the legal profession. Original Jurisdiction aspires to be a source of incisive, fair-minded, and occasionally entertaining commentary about law and the legal profession. Given the undeniable importance of law and the legal profession in American society and politics, for better or worse, and as the legal industry continues to expand in size and scope, for better or worse, it’s more important than ever to have outlets offering insight into these often insular and mysterious worlds.As I analyze complex and controversial legal issues and delve deep into the latest trends and events in the legal profession, I don’t pretend to be objective; like everyone else, I have my biases. I write a biweekly column for Bloomberg Law about the news, trends, and personalities shaping law and the legal profession today.

I am the author of Supreme Ambitions: A Novel (Ankyerwycke 2014), and I write for newspapers and magazines about law and legal affairs. My work has appeared in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, New York magazine, Washingtonian magazine, and Esquire (among other publications). I was a managing director in the New York office of Lateral Link, a leading legal recruiting firm, where I focused on placing top associates, partners and partner groups into preeminent law firms around the country. I also used my experience and expertise as a journalist to assist Lateral Link with media and public relations, including social media and content marketing, and I spoke before law firms at firmwide retreats, partner retreats, summer associate events, and diversity initiatives. In August 2006, I launched Above the Law ("ATL"), which today is a widely read and award-winning website covering the legal profession. The site, featuring content by five full-time writers and more than 50 outside columnists, receives more than 1 million unique visitors each month. I served as managing editor for more than a decade, from August 2006 until October 2017, and oversaw ATL's growth into one of the world's largest legal news websites.ATL has been named to the ABA Journal Blawg 100 (the 100 best websites for lawyers), honored as "Best Law Blog" in the annual Weblog Awards, and recognized as an Official Honoree of the Webby Awards in the "Law" category. The Washington Post has described ATL as "a must-read legal blog."

As a federal prosecutor in the Appeals Division, I briefed and argued cases before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit; advised trial teams on issues of law, including the drafting of proposed jury instructions; and argued in District Court in certain cases on remand from the Third Circuit, including sentencing proceedings and motions.

As an associate in the litigation department, I handled a mix of complex commercial litigation and white-collar matters. I took depositions, wrote briefs, and coordinated discovery proceedings in publicly filed cases, and I worked with colleagues to conduct internal investigations and write reports in confidential, non-public matters.I served on the trial team in IBP, Inc. v. Tyson Foods, which ended in a victory for our client, IBP, following a two-week trial in Delaware Chancery Court before then-Vice Chancellor Strine. I also worked on the litigation between Silverstein Properties, leaseholder of the World Trade Center, and its property insurers, which ultimately helped Silverstein secure enough money to rebuild the site.
