I get excited about Dental Imaging technology and what is has done for the practices that have adopted intraoral cameras, digital x-ray, and cone beam units. Most report greater practice satisfaction with superior diagnostics and ease of patient communication. When patients truly understand ,through images, their conditions and a clear path to the restoration of dental health they trust their dental provider. When we interview our clients they consistently put patient trust as a key factor in their practice satisfaction. Over the past 22 years I have witnessed many changes in dental imaging technology, from video based intraoral camera networks that used briefcase sized intraoral cameras to wireless intraoral cameras that interface directly with software. Despite the advancement in technology and the huge drop in price, most early adopters of intraoral cameras said it was well worth the investment. Treatment plan acceptance increased as a result of patients taking ownership of their conditions and choosing to have treatment even if the treatment had to be financed. Many of the dentists that started using intraoral camera technology found that the increased patient understanding helped strengthen the bond of trust with the patient and relieved a lot of stress based on misunderstanding. Digital x-rays are going through similar advancements as more practices are seeing the benefits of cone beam or 3D tomography. 2D x-rays are useful for identifying many indications of dental disease (caries, bone loss, periodontal lesions etc.) but lack the ability to provide information such as the width of bone available for an implant. Cone Beam Computed Tomography offers an x-ray that gives information in all three dimensions thus providing a much more accurate view helpful in implant placement, endodontics, and oral surgery.It is an exciting time to be in the industry and I look forward to participating in making it better for dentists and patients!
