Responsible for sustainability at GE Capital Real Estate, the commercial real estate investment arm of General Electric. I designed the sustainability strategy and led programs addressing operations, refurbishment and transactions across a multi-billion dollar property portfolio covering UK, Sweden, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Central Europe. I also worked with GE industrial businesses on technology and innovation around improving the energy & environmental performance of the built environment.I led GE's external engagement with real estate and wider industry leaders on sustainable business in particular through his roles as:- Member of the Better Buildings Partnership and Chairman of its Lender Sustainability Working Group;- Board Member of the Green Rating Alliance;- Speaker at industry events and conferences.Additionally, I supported GE’s growing commercial real estate lending business on new lending and existing loan book to address risk from Minimum Energy Efficiency standards legislation and other environmental issues.

Led the EHS Risk Management Team of a property investment business on acquisitions and divestitures spanning 12 EU countries and closing over $5BN acquisitions per year. Key responsibilities were environmental due diligence, underwriting and approval process in relation to direct real estate acquisitions ranging from single assets to portfolios of over one hundred assets across multiple geographies. Also worked on multi-billion dollar loan portfolio acquisitions. Asset classes included office, retail, warehouse, light industrial and residential. Managed external consultants and law firms across multiple jurisdictions, as well as relationship with partners and sellers on EHS issues and provided legal advice and transaction document drafting where necessary.Additional achievements included:• Advising & influencing senior leadership team on business impacts of rising sustainability agenda. • Managing government relations and industry partnerships on sustainability issues.• Providing legal and risk management advice to various GE industrial businesses on issues such as contaminated land, soil and groundwater remediation, asbestos, accident investigation and transaction documentation.

Providing full range of legal services for environmental aspects of client businesses covering:• Advisory and drafting work for retailers, banks, energy & water utilities, property owners and government departments on issues such as waste, contaminated land, industrial permitting, asbestos, hazardous substances labelling, radioactive substances, water pollution, human rights, emissions trading, climate change agreements and environmental management systems. • Transactional work on corporate and property deals, including drafting warranties and indemnities, appointment of environment consultants, due diligence and insurance. • Litigation including civil claims, criminal prosecutions and judicial reviews.In addition to fee-earning work, I set up CMS’ communities & pro bono program including school mentoring scheme, numbers scheme and charity of the year scheme.
