Most notably, I participated in a project set to improve Dutch Cybercrime Statistics. For this we devised a supervised learning method in which various classifiers were trained on dossier data acquired from the Dutch National Police department. A distinctive characteristic of police registration data is that files contain - by definition - many different types of information, including structured forms and raw reports. Part of my task was to invent, validate and document the data handling procedures required to process the vast quantities of unstructured dossiers and create rich feature sets, suitable for supervised learning. To achieve this, I created a novel module for R that used a range of linguistic characteristics to construct meaningful features. As a teacher, I assisted in various graduate courses in Advanced Methods and Statistics (OLS, Factor Analysis, SEM, and their non-linear generalizations). As a researcher, I worked on a study that aimed to generalize dyadic utility models of social motives to larger groups, and to test these models in controlled, incentivized economic experiments. The study integrated insights from behavioral economics, social psychology and sociology, applying rigorous model building techniques and novel Bayesian Inferential procedures. The experiments have been completed, and I am currently in the process of writing-up the results in the form of a PhD thesis.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The main findings so far have been that: (1) Existing dyadic models of social motives need augmenting to adequately explain the behavior of subjects in multiplayer DGs. The evidence suggests that apart from previously identified motives, subjects show a distinct motive regarding the inequality between others. (2) Social-motives scale with group-size in a non-linear manner. As group-size increases, motives become more relevant, but for large groups, their strength ultimately drops to zero. Explorative analysis showed that group-size also affected the decision-making process. (3) Social motives can be measured reliably and validly via our experimental procedure. A special class of Bayesian Mixed IRT-models was fitted on our data, and results showed that our experimental procedure could produce precise estimates of social motives. Furthermore, estimates correlated with measures of empathy, psychopathy in a manner that was expected; overall, this indicates good construct validity. Show less
