Rf/Microwave EngineerAtrenne Computing Solutions Llc (Formerly Curtiss-Wright) 2003 - 2006Davidson, North Carolina, UsResponsible for key components in the design of a 2.3 GHz Ultra Wideband based intrusion sensor. The QUPID (QUick reaction Perimeter Intrusion Detector) was demonstrated and sold to the AirForce for use in protecting high-risk assets within Air Force bases. Took part in the design of thetransmit and receive antenna systems, UWB generator, & receiver design. Secured an FCC/NTIAwaiver authorizing operation at higher output power levels. Process included generating reports, providing justification, and other correspondence with the FCC and NTIA.Conceived and co-developed a unique radar intercept/transmitter-mute circuit that momentarilyshuts down the sensor’s transmitter to prevent interference with close-proximity Airport SurveillanceRadar (ASR-8). The system senses the radar signature as the rotating ASR antenna comes intobore-site of the sensor, and mutes the transmitter.Developed a cost-reduced amplifier circuit for the APR39 Radar Detecting Set used on Black Hawkhelicopters.Led a team of engineers to develop an Automated Test Equipment (ATE) test stand to test the multiple control unit components used within the unit.Key Achievements:• Developed an innovative solution that allowed the deployment of the intrusion sensor for theprotection of high-risk nuclear storage areas in near proximity to the ASR withoutinterference. -
Senior Member Technical StaffNarad Networks 2001 - 2003UsPrincipal designer of an industry leading CATV Distribution Amplifier. This amplifier provided the "Legacy" analog gain function for a 2 Giga-bit Switched Ethernet product. This amplifier utilizes 4-octave wide, high linearity, 22 dB GaAs gain blocks, to provide 4 forward (downstream) feeder/trunk ports with 37 dB of gain, while meeting AOL/Time-Warner's performance "wish list" for CTB/CSO (linearity), flatness, noise, hum modulation, etc. The following circuits that were designed and utilized in this amplifier include; wideband amplifier stages, 4 way elliptical diplex filters with 15A AC bypassing, digitally controlled slope equalizers and variable attenuators, AGC function, 18 dB reverse (Upstream) amplifier, tunable “de-bump” equalizers, and power monitors. My responsibilities included design, all schematic capture, all layout, and debug. Principal designer of an industry leading CATV Distribution Amplifier. Sr. Microwave Engineer, Project LeaderPinpoint Corporation 1997 - 2000Credited by management as saving the program (and second-generation tag project), by creating an innovative circuit design that solved a major problem. This circuit was essentially a unique voltage doubler, and its function was to boost the voltage supplied by batteries in a portable RF positioning tag. It prevented a battery voltage drop from affecting an RF ASIC that could not tolerate this voltage drop. Redesigned and cost reduced a number of other system modules including a 5.8 GHz RF amplifier, 4 port RF switch, 2.4 GHz transmitter, and a number of smaller efforts. Credited with designing a very compact 2.4 GHz/5.8 GHz diplex/amplifier unit. This device was installed between successive cable runs to compensate for the losses in extended cable runs. The design included two diplex filters, 2 bias-tee’s, a 25 dB gain block at 5.8 GHz, and a 15 dB gain block at 2.4 GHz. The entire PC board measured 2.6” x .9”. Lead a team project to develop a next generation RF locating and positioning tag. Traveled to Germany to oversee the development of an RF ASIC for this device. This design is on schedule and working as intended. This design will cut the cost by over 60%, and will provide the required profit margins for this part of the system. Volunteered and taught weekly “Indoor Radio” classes to the Marketing, Sales, and SE groups.

Microwave EngineerErs International 1995 - 1997Primary designer and project lead on the development of a 2.44 GHz ISM band Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum radio. This radio is used in an indoor wireless price labeling system. Special features included receive antenna diversity switching, and frequency agility to allow the radio to operate as a DSSS radio, or as a FHSS radio. My responsibilities included design of all circuitry, including the synthesizer and a unique DSSS modulator that utilized a PIN switch and a quad hybrid to ensure repeatable and accurate bi-phase modulation from unit to unit with no tuning necessary. Other responsibilities were to oversee the development of special patch antenna elements designed to steer the beam. All antenna work was carried out at UMass Amherst under the direction of Professor Dan Schaubert, under my requirements and direction. Worked with Graduate students making extensive antenna measurements. This radio was completed on time, with myself and one technician handling all design, prototype, layout, debug, test, FCC approvals, and introduction to manufacturing. I possess extensive experience and an intuitive ability to create circuit layouts that minimizes circuit interaction and undesired radiation. The circuit board layout was completely done by me using PADS PCB software. The radio is FCC compliant. This radio was a redesign of another attempt by an outside consulting firm. I was credited with essentially saving the company for bringing a working, manufacturable radio to market in record time. I have extensive experience designing developing and testing ISM (2.44GHz and 5.78GHz) band indoor radio gear, and I have a good knowledge of indoor radio propagation. Developed and implemented a fully functional automated production test system for this radio.

EngineerWindata 1990 - 1995Responsible for the design of a 2.44/5.78 Ghz microwave radio that utilizes custom Gallium Arsinide (GaAs) MMIC's. This design included two Local PLL synthesizers, IF amplifiers, microstrip low pass Filters, and IF Band Pass filters. Responsibilities included circuit design, PCB layout, debug and testing, FCC Compliance, introduction to manufacturing, and production test. With the exception of two VCO’s, I was responsible for all circuit design. This design proved to be an extremely reliable and manufacturable radio. Participated in the Development of a Wireless building-to-building Ethernet link. Calculated and defined the gain distribution of the entire system. Solely responsible for specifying amplifiers, LNA's, filters, cables, and power dividers. Personally assembled, and tested all prototype and Beta units. Managed the mechanical design of the product. Worked extensively with Seavey Engineering to define and then measure antenna performance. Also worked with Seavey to develop an indoor antenna patch array. Obtained ETL/CSA/FCC certification. Designed, built, and installed a complete automated production test system for this radio. Solely responsible for all phases of development of an eight port 10Base-T repeater. Duties included: scheduling, circuit design, schematic capture, PCB layout, documentation, Alpha/Beta assembly, test, ETL/CSA and FCC certification, introduction to manufacturing, development of production test process, and training. This product was on time, on budget, and has been in production for over two years. No ECO's have ever been required. Also developed a three port interface unit that included 10Base-T, 10Base-2, and AUI interfaces.

EngineerCodex 1979 - 1990Miraflores, Lima, PeDeveloped a 68020-based Ethernet card to provide a LAN interface for a X.25 PAD and Packet Switch. Wrote functional specifications for this card.Designed a 16 MB/s parallel TDM bus to be part of a T1 switch. The TDM bus was designed to carry all user data between each board in the switch. The TDM bus is based on a centrally located scan memory for time slot allocation and high speed dual port RAMs for elastic buffers.Designed two versions of a 16-channel over-sampling TDM bus to carry I/O data between I/O cards and a port shelf. The TDM bus was scan memory based to provide programmable routing and sampling for each port. A second version was a simpler system and provided only variable sampling.Helped with the development of numerous other products including an RF Broadband Ethernet modem, LAN bridge, T1 distribution system, and several other products.
