Writing, Editing And Teaching
CurrentMy first short story was published in the London Magazine in 1995. Since then, many more of my stories have appeared in literary magazines and anthologies, as well as being broadcast on BBC Radio. From 1996 – 1997, I taught literature at Glasgow University. From 1999 – 2001, I was Literary Editor of Caledonia Magazine, while also writing and reviewing regularly for The Scotsman, The Herald, Scotland On Sunday, The Spectator and the British Council. In 2006, my first novel for teenagers, "CloudWorld", was published by Faber & Faber. It was nominated for the Manchester Book Award in 2007. A sequel, "CloudWorld At War", appeared in 2008. Also in 2008, I taught creative writing at Edinburgh University. In 2014, I was short-listed for the Robert Louis Stevenson Fellowship and in 2015 I was short-listed for the annual London Magazine short story competition. Since 2016 I have published new writing in the Scottish Review, the New Statesman, Spectator Life and the Scottish Review of Books. My most recent fiction publication was in the London Magazine in autumn 2023.
Senior Web Content Developer
US Booking Services is both an online travel agency (trading as "JustOneHotel") and a booking software provider for independent hotels (trading as "FreeToBook").For "FreeToBook" (2012 – 2013) my primary role was as editor of theBandBer.com, an online magazine dedicated to celebrating the independent accommodation sector worldwide. I wrote almost all the content, interviewed property owners from the UK, the US and Canada and commissioned guest blogs from hospitality experts. I also raised the profile of the magazine through regular email newsletters and via social media. In its first 18 months, theBandBer.com attracted 20,000 unique visitors, 3,700 Twitter followers and close to 1,000 Facebook fans. This audience was achieved partly by using Google Analytics to track visits and tailor future content accordingly (e.g. focusing on “how to” articles that emphasised boosting sales.) During this period I also wrote a substantial number of blog posts for the main FreeToBook blog, using WordPress. While working for "JustOneHotel" (2003 – 2011), my main responsibility was writing content (hotel descriptions, city guides, transport information) for 136 distinct city websites. I also oversaw the work of a 5-person content creation team who kept our hotel descriptions up to date by integrating guest feedback. Using Photoshop, Dreamweaver and in-house software, I designed interactive maps for each site – albeit to templates created by our programming team. I was also responsible for applying SEO principles across all websites and reviewing/updating metadata on a regular basis.
Administrative Assistant
In my role as Administrative Assistant in the Student Records & Examinations Office I was primarily responsible for student data analysis and the preparation of statutory reports on student numbers to the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). I also assisted with the organisation of exams and bi-annual graduation ceremonies.
