Leading a team of advisors and senior advisors to one of Canada’s preeminent cabinet ministers, I was able to lead a rethinking of Canada’s micro-economic policy, a transition from a completely laissez-faire approach to a more active economic role for the state. I led the delivery of Canada’s innovation agenda to Cabinet and the Prime Minister, introducing a suite of new programming including the Superclusters initiative, the creation of Innovation Canada and the Strategic Innovation Fund, the reimagining of the NRC, CanCode, Canada’s first national IP Strategy, and worked with the Minister to develop Canada’s first digital and data strategy. • Year on year the most lobbied political staffer in Ottawa, leading industry engagement• Overseeing the Minister’s executive business at Cabinet• Positioning the Minister for success within Cabinet and in relation to the budget process• Managing relationships with the Prime Minister’s Office and other key political staff• Managing relationships with senior civil servants from Deputy Ministers to Agency heads• Making critical decisions on behalf of the Minister often under significant pressureThe honour and opportunity, which I was afforded to work with Minister Bains and his Cabinet colleagues is one that I did not take lightly.
