David Chavis, Ph.D., is a former Senior Fellow at Community Science and its former CEO and founder. He is internationally recognized for his work in the implementation, support, and evaluation of community initiatives, including a distinguished career award from the American Psychological Association and the Outstanding Evaluation of the Year Award by the American Evaluation Association (AEA). The primary topic of his work and scientific publications has been the development of community and nonprofit organizational capacity to address racial and other inequities related to economic and social mobility, health, and overall neighborhood quality of life. David has led the evaluation of several place-based comprehensive community initiatives for national and local foundations and government agencies that focused on community and larger systems changes. He has also designed, managed, and implemented capacity-building systems of intermediary organizations for community change initiatives. His many years of work on these issues has provided him with the opportunity to work with and learn from a wide array of ethnic and racial communities across this country as well as in Europe, Africa, and Southern and Southeast Asia. A major focus of his current work and writings has been on how to strengthen intermediary organizations that are part of the infrastructure or ecosystem for community power-building and community-driven systems changes to dismantle racism and promote equity and justice. He is also studying white backlash that comes because of community power-building and other efforts to achieve racial justice.Before founding Community Science, David Chavis was a community organizer, community development corporation executive director, director of large university research and public service center, and tenured university professor.
