Choosing to act provides the results you want. Here's where the story really gets good... Why do we change careers? Some of you might say personal growth, others might say better pay. For me these reasons are secondary to helping others grow. As a graduate teaching assistant, we undoubtedly need to check certain boxes like:-Research and development of a non-profit startup guide for use by membersAre you bored yet? Well, I am here to say this: just because your idea to create social impact may start out reading like this, there's no reason it has to stay that way. Create social impact by bringing together structure, revenue and the best possible team and bang- your venture that many simply call everyday life, can fill you and your community with joy and excitement again!

After blogging for a few years as a volunteer, I realized that I could continue developing my creative spark and get paid for it. Now, let me be clear, I am not "that guy" who cares about nothing but cash flow. Instead, I am writing this chapter as a way to focus your attention on the importance of having diversity in your organization's revenue streams.Social impact simply cannot happen at the level you want without money. Yes, contrary to what you may have heard, nonprofits can, and should make money to increase your value to the community. For me, that journey continues through crafting unique profiles of other's in southeastern North Carolina working hard everyday to create a valuable brand.

For eight years, I used my creative spark to publish stories. Stories about my own struggle to keep it rollin' through life, the stories of other sparks in the community who have a passion for helping others, and sometimes, whatever I felt like talking about in a given week.That kind of exposure quickly made me recognizable, both within Southeastern North Carolina and far beyond it. What many of some connections may not understand about this time in my life is how challenging it came to be. Certainly, it has it's rewards, like getting stopped in the grocery story by a stranger who just wants to say thank you, having your work published in textbooks which thousands of college students will buy, to presenting at tech conferences and more. Yet, as a content producer, it was never about trying to seek pity from my audience. I wanted to develop a fully functioning community of advocates.Still, in news, plans are trumped by a post that is more time sensitive, you are constantly considering the next big project. The community became a group of content watchers, wondering what the next post might be, and while that is happening more and more in the era of social media, let me be real, it caused me to burnout.Still, just as a blog needs a constant content refresh, so too must social impact organizations. Today, I share the strategies, many of which I which I knew while running this blog to ensure your team can be successful. Whether your dream is to start a nonprofit or manage a social enterprise, you first need to understand how best to structure the model to fit your needs.

This first chapter may be a short one but it's worth a quick read... Why, you ask? Well, Being an Intern at StarNews Media gave me the creative spark I needed. The spark I now work with social impact ventures to develop as Coach and Owner of DF Morrison Consulting (See the current chapter above).In this unique role, a rockstar team of journalists took me under their wings and coached me in the business of developing content that consumers of news really want. From blog posts about tech to stories about some no so ordinary crimes, I assisted in crafting the news for readers across Southeastern North Carolina.
