I am leading the shift from our current platform to a simpler, more flexible future, enabling WGU to scale far beyond its current 180,000 students by reaching new students that don't fit the traditional WGU pattern. While further enabling competency-based education, we're also implementing traditional higher ed patterns like electives and prerequisites to better help students achieve their educational and workplace aspirations.

Western Governors University is the largest university in the United States with over 140,000 active students. Online assessments enables its competency-based education model, and that's the space we've been reimagining. As a team laden with tech-debt, aging architecture, security vulnerabilities and incessant support incidents, I worked closely with our academic partners and our product owners to understand their forward-looking assessment needs, established a vision for our domain, architected our path from a monolithic and database-driven past towards an exciting microservices and graph database future, and lead the strategic planning and day-to-day execution to bring it to reality. Along the way, we're pioneering new CI/CD pipelines, migrating to EKS, expanding meaningful observability and monitoring through application-specific metrics and converting to an event-driven architecture.

I'm lucky to work with the most seasoned development team at inContact. As part of the world's best CCaaS platform, the inContact media services team writes the software that powers over 6 billion customer phone calls per year on 1300+ servers throughout the world. As an experienced team accustomed to real-time communication, we use SIP, RTP, C++, C#, REST and Windows Server to process the world 20ms at a time as we handle over 75,000 simultaneous voip calls. We are an entrepreneurial team that frequently investigates and adopts new technology to help us do things faster and better. Leaning on my technical background, I evaluate new technology and help set the technical direction for the team. This has led to significant improvements as we've quantified our code coverage, corralled our independent test suites into a continuous integration pipeline, pioneered new microservices, embraced automated deployment, and migrated to .NET Core--all while pushing the DevOps envelope. My opinion is valued by software architects on other teams throughout the company.

Instead of bemoaning the state of public education, I set out to reboot it. Combining my academic background with my work experience as a ScrumMaster, software engineer, and college professor, I created and implemented the Wasatch Institute of Technology--Utah's first computer science high school. As founder and CEO, I pioneered an educational adaption of Scrum to create a unique learning laboratory, a place to try new things, innovate, and iterate. It takes a thorough understanding of the Agile principles, creativity, hard work, and persistence to successfully apply Scrum in a new context.

BidSync's eProcure software enables government agencies to handle bid requests, reverse auctions, proposals, requisitioning, purchase orders, workflows and more--all while lowering prices for goods and services. No wonder it's the Gartner-recommended eProcurement software solution for government. The tech skills I enhanced while in academia served us well at BidSync as we rewrote our legacy app:• Wrote write performant, reliable new JavaEE code and successfully refactored legacy Java code• Used code coverage/profiler tools on existing codebase to identify deprecatable features with Emma • Introduced Java logging to legacy codebase to find and fix elusive problems• Implemented server configuration management, orchestration, and remote execution via Salt• Dramatically increased unit test code coverage by championing unit testing with JUnit and TestNG• Installed local developer databases using virtualization and Linux • Worked with our largest client to design, code, and test our first REST backend with JAX-RS• Brought versioning and schema control to our Oracle database using Liquibase• Integrated with third-party vendors, including SalesForce, Impartner (Treehouse), and Zendesk• Introduced dependency management with Apache Ivy and cut our local build time nearly 75% with Ant
