I was one of two senior members of a team responsible for the implementation of Strategy Based Maintenance (RCM) programmes across the Whyalla works. I was personally responsible for half of the works. This required the establishment of procedures, user guides and the training of plant personnel in the development/review of maintenance plans.
Whyalla Steelworks
During 1993 & 1994, I was one of two team leaders tasked with the implementation of Strategy Based Maintenance (SBM), BHP’s version of RCM, across the Whyalla Works. I was involved in the development of the process, development of procedures and reference guides, training the Maintenance Analyst’s, supporting the systems, and monitoring progress and benefits. The SBM approach focussed strongly on Strategy selection based on Whole of Life Cost. In house developed software was used to analyse plant criticality, store failure mode data, and perform cost based frequency optimisation of tasks. I was instrumental in interfacing these systems with BHP’s Maintenance system, speeding failure data collection and plan implementation, and then extending failure data usage to provide for Zero Based Maintenance Budget development.

Reporting to the Chief Maintenance Engineer, my main responsibilities were the development of maintenance task procedures, implementation of condition monitoring programme, and the identification and elimination of maintenance / operation problems.
Traineeship involved 5 years part time studies with the then South Australian Institute of Technology Whyalla Campus (now University of South Australia), combined with structured on site training within BHP's Whyalla Steelworks, followed by a final full time year at the SAIT Levels Campus.
