After graduation, my early career in Hotel Management and Conferencing gave me a great springboard into the NPO sector, where in the early 2000’s we were only just realising the enormous potential and special requirements of Student and Youth Travel. Since then, I have been immersed in the industry - a $300bn valued industry - who in the way of Generation Z, Millennials and and GenX before them, are not so much tourists, as world travellers wanting authentic experiences.I have been able to play a major role in this evolution, within the NPO sector, managing the various associations which assist with travel, accommodation and integrated service solutions. In a “for-profit” world, the dominant story about human nature is changing. Research increasingly shows that, under the right conditions, we have a tendency to co-operate, not compete. In my career in the Not for Profit sector this is an ongoing theme and I have contributed to and thrived in such ethos driven structures. It has also been a great privilege to smash widely held paradigms that NPO’s cannot be financially viable or capable of innovation and growth. The truly great aspect of working in such an environment, however, is that I work with like-minded people- all of whom are passionate about operating at world class standards, seeing the “profits” of their labour ploughed back into the enterprise or community which in turn incentivises even more committed teams. My leadership style in the creation and financial management of these entities can be summed in a travel analogy – creating a road map, taking full cognisance of where we are, where we want to be, and the passengers we want on the trip. Creating a culture that enables both the departure, journey and destination to be enjoyable and gratifying, is what defines my career.

Over the course of the last 5 years I have turned around the organisation to be a respected player in the Youth and Student Travel community, with 430 members across 68 countries and endorsed by UNESCO.In order to achieve this, I had to re-establish relationships of trust with associations, members, board and creditors – renegotiating debt repayments and adhering meticulously to all new arrangements and agreements. Another key aspect was the recruiting and restructuring of staff, embedding new processes, setting individual key objectives and forming a cohesive and motivated team. We managed to grow turnover to €2.2m, (representing a growth of 45%) and return a balanced budget. Annually we arrange six conferences and events across the globe to position the Confederation as a reliable, sustainable and preferential partner for Youth and Student travellers.Challenges along the way have included closing insolvent companies and establishing new entities, introducing integrated IT systems, CRM and websites.I manage the organisation within a matrix management structure, guiding and directing the confederation and its associates in strategy, operations and collaborative projects. I have full ownership of P&L, balances sheets, budgeting, cash flow and forecasting, while monitoring and improving financial disciplines. An enjoyable part of my duties is to represent the confederation at conferences - addressing and presenting to tourism bodies and government authorities. Show less -
