As a Branch Support Specialist in the Shared Services division of Human Resources, I was a go-to resource for my local office, as well as employees across the country, looking for assistance. I was responsible for branch office management functions, such as maintaining quality work environment, providing staff with the supplies, stationery and resources needed to accomplish their objectives, and coordinating and executing employee engagement activities. Through my 11 years with the company, I built up a reserve of knowledge and connections both internally and externally to draw from when assisting team members with issues or concerns.During my tenure, I maintained a diverse workload and enjoyed the fact that every day brought new people and challenges to my desk or inbox.In addition to serving team members, I also provided our department leadership with task-based metric reporting to analyze trends in department performance and provide senior leadership with a higher-level understanding of day-to-day operations. I also managed the company-wide office supplies and stationery programs. By maintaining a collaborative business relationship I ensured employees were provided high-quality items at the most cost-effective pricing.The most creativity-infused responsibilities of this role came when crafting and executing meaningful and memorable employee engagement activities that boosted morale. Eight years at a video store is basically at eternity, but for a movie lover it was paradise. My first job at the age of 15 spanned eight years and taught me about every aspect of store operations. Beyond offering product suggestions and answering questions, completing store opening / closing tasks, and reviewing daily revenue receipts, I mastered being comfortable in one-on-one customer interactions and relationship building. During one summer, I oversaw store operations as the Interim Manager, scheduling staff, supervising 4–6 employees, resolving escalated customer issues, and performing basic accounting functions.I often looked for ways to exercise some creativity in the small business environment, one time developing a new strategy that integrated sell-through products with rental items to increase visibility and drive sales. Another time I instigated and led the efforts to host a store-centric parade float. It served as a low-cost advertising opportunity to generate goodwill relations and provide our target customers with money-saving coupons, which boosted traffic to the store. And in what would be the final year of store operations, I produced and directed a feature-length documentary about the store in cooperation with the business owner that was invited to screen at film festivals in Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, and Pennsylvania. It was the beginning of the end for the video store era - but ultimately this part-time job was the catalyst for what would become a career serving others using the interpersonal skills learned here.
