I have a keen interest in business - the logistical, operational processes that create value. My formal studies in Tool Design/Making, a blend of art-craft-technology, instilled a mindset of precision measurement, execution and refinement of processes. This foundation is universally applicable to all businesses/organizations, and particularly to technical endeavours. Designing a 'tool' - whether a physical tool, or an administrative, organizational 'construct' - requires an objective focus, working 'backwards' ... for instance, as with a three-dimensional plastic item necessitating an injection mould. The tool must be designed 'outward' around the item, adding necessary layers of structure: channels for molten plastic to flow; conduits for coolant to maintain the tool temperature; sufficient material for threaded holes for fasteners; etc. etc. and must fit within parameters of the plastic injection press. This is parametric design through all aspects.There is a need to think, imagine, from the inside-out ... backward, etc. in order to result in final product. Also, the 'tool' designed to produce a single product, will be different from a tool to produce a dozen ... or several dozen ... and drastically different from a tool to produce millions, at consistent high quality over many years of operation. In addition, there's the vitally important issue of Quality Control, which must be integral throughout.So, too, with designing organizational 'tools' for logistical, operational processes.This all applies 'on the ground', for any workplace - any business, in any industry. It is not just the design of elaborate sophisticated machine tools that matter. In the case of 'front line' staff, the design is actually the decision 'in the moment', 'on the fly' of how to do any particular task/process/project. As regards 'business', in general ... any business ... it is important to understand that every tool matters: the selection of the proper/best tool for the job; the proper/best use of each tool. For instance, the humble shovel. Actually there are many types of shovel. Is it a shovel for digging undisturbed hard ground? Digging deep? Or perhaps a shovel for scooping loose aggregate material? Or, for 'scraping' a surface clean, and 'throwing' material to the side. All require different shovels. It is the responsibility of companies/organizations to determine the best tools to do a job, and the best way to use those tools ... and, training is itself a 'tool': designing the training process is key to overall consistent productivity and safety.
