Wilson dwilson@ChaiGuy.netMany institutions and campuses use RFID cards for door access. The same technology can be used to facilitate purchases in various venues on the campus. Sales increases of 25% are possible in vending systems. Some cards have a magnetic stripe and/or bar code available for various functions as well. RFID is more secure and easier to use. RFID is not easily duplicated, the bar code is. RFID is not, however, easily deprogrammed or erased the magnetic stripe is. Magnetic stripe readers also have mechanical reliability issues due to dirt build up.The RFID card is read then authenticated by live data-base via secure v-lan. When authentication is acknowledged, the machine activates for purchase. Purchase information is then securely delivered to the data-base. Candy, pastry, drink and laundry (wash and dry) are all available (New and recent Coke and Pepsi vending machines from various manufactures are operational, along with 80's vintage technology and Maytag® serial communications from various manufacturers.) 2:RFID Vehicle ID systemby David N. Wilson Placing an RFID card in windshield of vehicle allows for identification of vehicles as they approach an entrance or exit gate of a campus. A high-gain antenna connected to a transceiver that communicates with the RFID tag retrieves data from the tag. This data is then compared to a secure database. Gates and/or lights operate to allow or disallow vehicle access to the campus. In this system, the vehicle unit is passive RFID, not battery powered or battery assist.
