Grew Olo Engineering more than 25-fold by establishing norms and strategies for hiring top engineering talent through a hyper-growth phase. Established software engineering practices that led to strong execution in both product delivery and platform engineering. Directed product management, development, QA, tech support and operations functions across three locations for this IT security products firm, reporting to the CEO. Collaborated to define the product and architecture roadmap, reviewed software designs, monitored development iterations, prioritized support escalations, directed work of outsourced engineering team, and coached engineers on usability, requirements, design, agile process, and quality concerns. Product distributed on Linux appliance incorporating Apache/MySQL/PHP for web-based administration, and Java, C and C++ components for the TCP/IP-based networking and SSH/RDP/VNC recording subsystems.✔ Stabilized team that had suffered significant attrition and grew team from 15 to 38.✔ Transformed engineering execution using an agile process framework to improve quality while delivering two significant feature releases per year.✔ Completed and integrated a technology acquisition that added key capabilities to our core product.✔ Initiated a test automation effort that reduced QA regression cycles from 12 to 6 weeks.✔ Implemented new support processes and oversaw deployment of a customer support portal.✔ Served as interim CEO for five months.

Led product development and QA for this IT security products firm, reporting to the CEO. Negotiated product roadmap for our Java-based security data analytics application, drove release planning, monitored development iterations, prioritized support escalations, and coached team on agile processes.✔ Implemented agile processes to improve project transparency with product manager.✔ Critical project was in trouble when I joined. Quickly assessed situation, reset plan, instituted interim project management processes, and delivered against the new plan.

Directed a software development team and the corporate System Test (QA) group, reporting to the VP, Product Operations. Planned releases with product management and hardware engineering, monitored engineering progress against those plans, and coached team on agile processes.✔ Applied agile methods to deliver a next generation digital KVM switch on an accelerated schedule. Team cut one-third off project execution time and the resulting product generated 25% fewer customer-reported defects in first six months vs. prior products.✔ Delivered key product enhancements for Raritan's flagship KVM and secure access product lines.✔ Initiated test automation and reliability testing projects to improve product robustness.

Managed product development of BEA's TUXEDO C++ middleware platform. Worked with product management on strategic planning and product roadmap, established release plans, managed a development team of 10 engineers, and provided overall project management across development, QA and tech pubs functions. Engaged customers to negotiate, plan and deliver custom enhancements.✔ Introduced agile methods to organize and drive the product roadmap and deliver new product value.✔ Delivered five product releases on time and on budget.✔ Planned and implemented transfer of engineering responsibilities to overseas location.

Managed product development and QA for Improv's Cirquet Solution Suite, a Java-based application deployment and Web services platform, reporting to the CEO. Worked with product management and executive team on strategic product planning. Company failed to secure VC funding.

Directed the HP-UX kernel development team that was responsible for the storage I/O subsystem. Established technology vision, strategy and roadmap for SCSI I/O and the device driver framework, evaluated project and feature development plans, and monitored team’s results against those plans. Served as management lead for a geographically distributed, cross-department team (50 engineers; $8M budget) that delivered the core HP-UX operating system changes for Intel’s Itanium Processor Family (IPF) architecture. Directed the development contributions of two Japanese OEM partners.✔ Delivered the first commercial operating system, HP-UX 11.20, for Intel's IPF processor.✔ Delivered a series of enhancements to the HP-UX SCSI I/O subsystem and driver framework.

Led development teams responsible for Network Interface Card drivers as well as an ISO-compliant OSI protocol stack.

Led product development for a UNIX System V-based source code product that implemented an ISO-compliant OSI protocol stack.

Contributed to the design and implementation of the networking subsystem of UNIX System V, including the STREAMS I/O framework as well as the Transport Layer Interface (TLI) and Data Link Provider Interface (DLPI).
