Senior Horticulture Technician
CurrentJoined the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens as an apprentice and completed all steps of the formal Horticulturalist Professional Development Program. As Senior Horticulturalist, I lead a staff of 10 horticultural specialists caring for over 6 acres of property. My role includes horticulture design, garden maintenance, and business management responsibilities. I partner with Zoo leadership to plan expansions and transitions. Once plans are approved and funded, I lead my team in designing and building gardens in accordance to growth plans with consideration to plant-animal alignment. On a daily basis, I manage the maintenance of existing plants for maximum longevity, monitor budgets, provide coaching, secure plant sources with vendors, and direct garden projects. Primary Projects:• Design, cultivation, and ongoing maintenance of the Savanna Blooms Garden and Giraffe Exhibit.• Design and construction of a succulent garden along the route of the Zoo train strategically filling open space between exhibits.• Development and implementation of a 90 day development program for the horticultural department.• Create and lead new garden tours to educate Zoo visitors and support fundraising campaigns.
