As a trainee lawyer in the IP/Tech practice group, I advised national and international clients from various industries in all questions of information technology law. I was in direct contact with clients, be it on the phone, via email or in person and handled important client relationships under the supervision of partners. The following is a selection of some of the projects I worked on:In the data protection compliance area, I advised clients as part of GDPR compliance projects. This included the project management in the fact gathering phase, advise on automated decision making, cookies, user tracking, analytics, cloud services, binding corporate rules and much more. In E-Commerce, I created and revised terms of service, advised on informational obligations for websites, protection of minors and electronic signature law. I drafted and revised software related contracts and advised on the topic of Software as a Service (SaaS). Other areas I assisted in include intellectual property, direct marketing and compliance with the Energy Efficiency Directive.

As part of my traineeship I was fortunate enough to spend time with the London IP/Tech team and assist with advising well-known, high-profile international clients on various data protection related topics like GDPR, AdTech, workflows for and semi-automation of data subject access requests in large-scale organisations, artificial intelligence and machine learning in the legal and customer service context.

I continued my work for various clients, including large healthcare startups and media houses. For example, I worked on the sign up and login flow and analytics for mobile apps (iOS and android) used by millions of users. For a different customer, I build a high performance, large-scale media management portal used by hundreds of professional photographers. The technology stack used differs from project to project, but could include React, react-native, redux, redux-saga, GraphQL, nodejs and npm, express, NoSQL databases like CouchDB or MongoDB, AWS, Docker and various dev ops frameworks and services, not to mention the various libraries used for testing (test driven development). For a few recent projects I picked up python, PyTorch and fastai for machine learning and natural language processing.

The extremely talented Munich IP/Tech team taught me the ins and outs of German and European data protection law in my time as a law clerk. It was here that I first worked on complex international compliance projects, contract negotiation and research into new and unexplored legal problems. I also co-authored an article on the German Court Practice Regarding the Use of Illegally Obtained Evidence in Civil Law Proceedings in the Word Data Protection Report together with my colleague Prof. Dr. Michael Schmidl.

excellenteasy was a JavaScript and mobile web application consultancy that I co-founded together with a partner straight out of high-school (“Gymnasium” in Germany). We focused on pushing the boundaries of what was possible at the time with JavaScript, HTML and CSS in mobile browsers and on mobile devices.From internal applications, customer facing apps and products we built everything for our international clients. We also consulted startups regarding difficult questions on specific technological problems, e.g. for specific JavaScript frameworks with our highly specialized expertise.After working on various applications we shared our lessons learned with the JavaScript community: Bradypodion.js – a post-platform mobile web application framework – allowing developers to build iOS and Android apps (https://github.com/excellenteasy/bradypodion), which was built on top of angular and less.

KeywordBrain was a company dedicated to state-of-the-art SEO algorithms. We launched our product at keywordbrain.com, which found adoption in the SEO community. It was later pivoted to a private, in-house tool used by a bespoke SEO agency. The public keywordbrain.com service has since been discontinued.
