GE makes many things by processing metal—some are very critical to peoples' safety—e.g. the rapidly rotating parts in the jet engines of a passenger airplane—and some mostly just have to look nice—e.g. a refrigerator or dishwasher door or cooktop appliance. Processing steps have a big influence on properties and mechanical performance of finished products in part because the state of the underlying microstructure can undergo significant evolution during forming. Strides in understanding are being made by rooting material behavior to phenomena occurring at the micro scale.I have interest in all aspects of metals processing including computational modeling and mechanics which draws upon a variety of disciplines from many fields of study including continuum mechanics, inelasticity, polycrystal plasticity, finite element modeling, parallel and high performance computing.
