I have turned what used to be a hobby and gave me a career into my mission. I became interested in computers and computing whilst in the Army. An advert for Sinclair's ZX80 in the Times caught my eye. The possibility of learning how it worked was fascinating. On my next visit to the UK I popped into W H Smiths. They W H Smiths had a ZX81 pinned to a vertical black backdrop. one look determined never to own anything so ugly. However, I still desired to get involved in computing. Tottenham Court Road showed me that Texas Instruments could overprice as much as they liked but if it was a case of 'don't touch the merchandise' then they weren't going to see my cash. A posting to Leicester allowed me to see an early Apple, about £400, and a Commodore Vic 20, £230. The choice was easy. My loyalty to Commodore remained undimmed through 3 further years in the Army and 5 years at University. I spent many hours learning how to use the various machines Commodore produced during the 80's. At one time I was even able to have a more powerful Commodore Amiga at home whilst working on an IBM AT, 30 Mb HDD, at work. 11 years with major consultancy W S Atkins, travelling the world or at least the remoter parts of it and often the only person on team with IT skills. 10 years running my own IT project and programme support services company added to my knowledge and skills. During this time I financed training courses and certification to add value to projects I supported. 5 years at Tesco providing technical support to customers and finding out how big was the gap in people's knowledge of IT devices. This made me consider what I could do to provide support for those who needed some basic introduction to PCs and tablets. I volunteered in local library as a Computer Buddy and also volunteered with Age Concern Epsom & Ewell to visit clients and teach them what I could about IT. I have also started doing classes at home for those that wish to learn more.
