About David Poblador I Garcia

I've been leading tech departments, systems administration and infrastructure teams for 23+ years. I am a systems specialist with broad experience in organizational design, scalability, distributed systems, cloud architectures, GNU/Linux administration. At Spotify I started the Site Reliability Engineering department, and made it grow from 5 people to an infrastructure organization of 100+ individuals. I was also deeply involved in several business critical projects: the migration of 15K+ physical servers to Google Cloud, the preparation of the tech stack to become a publicly traded company, acquisitions of companies (due diligence processes), data protection regulations requirements, among others. I pioneered an effort to instrument the life of the engineering teams and the entire infrastructure stack to inform company wide investments to increase productivity by taking a data centric approach to identifying organizational and technological opportunities.Back in 2001, I started up my own company and ran it for 7+ years where I gained experience in project management, business administration and systems architecture. I was the technical lead and one of the managing directors and co-founders.

Senior Director Of Engineering - Principal Engineer
    Spotify Mar 2020 - Sep 2022
    Stockholm, Stockholm County, Se
During this time I've contributed to several cross cutting projects primarily identifying aging stacks and discovering ways to modernize them. Some examples worth mentioning:- Revamping the VCS/CI strategy. With the increased requirements imposed by a growing organization and a more modern approach to infrastructure (moving towards a more declarative way of expressing infrastructure), we proactively identified our version control systems and backend CI stack as potential risk points.- Reducing the reliance on individual compute regions for our data processing stack: with billions of events processed every day (many of those powering critical features and business processes) we have an increased need for improving our redundancy mechanisms and recovery plans in the event of major cloud incidents. At the same time, that strategy must honor all the requirements imposed by our data protection policies and regulations. Also, for a period of 6 months I took the interim leadership of the team in charge of the employee productivity at Spotify (Productivity Engineering). During this time I continued the transformation of the organization into a product oriented one (similar to my previous experience with the Infrastructure organization). I also mentored the next generation of leaders in the space. In the middle of the transformation the remit of the team increased vastly as a result of the new ways of working imposed by the global pandemic.
  • Spotify
Senior Director Of Engineering - Principal Engineer
    Spotify Nov 2018 - Mar 2020
    Stockholm, Stockholm County, Se
During this period, I was in charge of kicking off an initiative (Platform Insights) aiming to instrument both the life of an engineer at Spotify and some of the components in the critical path for delivering software. The idea behind the initiative was to create a set of solid blessed data sets and analyses aiming to understand and improve the productivity of the engineering community at Spotify. It also served as a powerful tool to guide future investments in infrastructure, trying to uncover opportunities for platformization and simplification. The initiative was a major success and over the years Spotify has doubled down on that effort by investing more aggressively in the space and by building strong connections with companies with similar initiatives (like Microsoft, Google and Airbnb).Among other projects, I led the strategy behind the revamp of our service to service communication architecture aiming to improve security without damaging the developer productivity and minimizing the need for rebuilding software across a vast ecosystem.
  • Spotify
Director Of Engineering - Principal Engineer
    Spotify Sep 2017 - Nov 2018
    Stockholm, Stockholm County, Se
As the first Principal Engineer at Spotify, I led projects and participated in initiatives that sat in the confluence of multiple organizations and teams at Spotify and didn't have a natural home. I took part in the architectural reviews of the due diligence processes we follow when we acquire companies and review vendors.During this period I led some activities to deprecate some parts of Spotify's legacy infrastructure (testing and integration environments) which saved Spotify millions of dollars yearly.
  • Spotify
Director Of Engineering, Infrastructure And Operations
    Spotify Mar 2016 - Sep 2017
    Stockholm, Stockholm County, Se
As a Director in the Infrastructure organization I led parts of the organization that were instrumental to successfully migrate our infrastructure from an on premise centric world to the Google Cloud Platform. We managed to accomplish this in less than 2 years despite the large footprint of our infrastructure (15000+ physical servers). I took part in designing a product oriented infrastructure organization in the context of a mission that shifted from having an infrastructure centric mindset into an engineering enablement organization. At the same time, I helped the infrastructure organization navigate the new requirements imposed by becoming a public company, by envisioning ways to meet all the new requirements regarding compliance and security without damaging the productivity of our large engineering community.
