About David Albrecht

David Albrecht is a Hiring a product designer @ Dials at Dials. He possess expertise in ruby on rails, python, cloud computing, javascript, software development and 19 more skills. He is proficient in French. Colleagues describe him as "David was one of the early engineers at Crittercism, and influenced deeply many product initiatives throughout his tenure at the company. Some of the toughest operations and engineering issues were sent to David and he handled them all successfully. Always deeply engrossed in his work, David also took time to be a cheerful and considerate colleague. I'd highly recommend David and work with him again.", "David is an expert at solving problems and building scalable infrastructure. He has the rare ability to be a Swiss army knife to tackle any issue and apply whatever technology to achieve the optimal result. As a product manager, it's important to have an engineer that can not only implement, but understand the overall vision. During the planning stages, his previous experiences allowed us to build what we needed the first time and not spend a lot of time refactoring. He's also not afraid to dive into specs and fix issues that may block implementation. There's not a lot of developers that I'd give my cosign, but David is a rare breed and I'd wholeheartedly recommend him for any project.", and "David was chief architect of a cutting edge process and product. His attention to detail, and ability to think through all of the iterations were invaluable to the team, and the success of the company. I would highly recommend David as a top contributor and resident genius."

  • Starsky Robotics
    Senior Software Engineer (Truck Platform)
    Starsky Robotics Apr 2019 - Dec 2019
    San Francisco, California (Ca), Us
Switched teams to truck systems engineering - emphasis on truck networking, and reusable code abstractions for communication, threading, and resource management. Most work in modern C++. * Developed hardware drivers for second-generation hardware (camera, radar)* Created reusable abstractions supporting shift from multi- to single-process ROS node execution* Laid foundation for teleop direct connect, the "netcode" inspired library for low-latency relay of real-time driving commands (pedal/wheel positions) from a remote command station, to a semi truck hundreds/thousands of miles away.
  • Starsky Robotics
    Senior Software Engineer (Infrastructure)
    Starsky Robotics Nov 2018 - Mar 2019
    San Francisco, California (Ca), Us
Hired into cloud infrastructure / data group. * Engineering excellence: led effort to convert mixed Python/C++ codebase from git-based, on-truck checkout/compile, to version-based, pre-compiled deployment (apt). Including: implementing standardized mapping between git checkouts and version numbers, zero-downtime overhaul of build/release tooling, and optimizing deployment for bandwidth-constrained LTE transit* Began moving data infrastructure from schemaless blobs to more standard, event-oriented design* Worked to improve code quality through reviews and shared libraries. Introduced standard cloud patterns: resource factories, layering, etc. * Began simplification and standardization of mixed truck/office/cloud network environment* Began learning ROS (robot operating system)
  • Shortbar
    Managing Partner
    Shortbar Jun 2015 - Oct 2018
Fed up with startup life, I started a consulting group with 3 other guys. I acted as the engineering manager and client-facing partner, managing a full-remote team of between 1 and 4 people. We worked together for 3.5 years, doing operations-focused technology consulting. Our largest project was HOLMS, the "Hotel Operations and Lodging Management System". The project ran--and continues to run--a multi-property hotel chain with ~800 rooms and $XX million revenue/year, with a vast feature scope spanning room supply control (price and quantity), card processing, folios (tax and fee compliance, accounting system integration), groups (e.g. weddings), operations (housekeeping, room assignment), basic CRM, role-based access control, and CQRS/event sourcing-based change control. The client-facing booking app (a small but important piece of the overall system) is visible at https://www.columbusmotorinn.com/Though this work will never make the front page of TechCrunch, it is a secure, high-reliability, fit-to-purpose system deployed in April, 2018. I wouldn't be surprised if it's still in use in 2035. As much as I loved being an indie filmmaker, I felt my true calling was high-budget, envelope-pushing Hollywood blockbusters, so I went back to Silicon Valley, in autonomous robots.
  • Apteligent (Acq. Vmw)
    Senior Software Engineer (Fixer)
Apteligent (Acq. Vmw) Jan 2015 - Jun 2015
    San Francisco, Ca, Us
In-house consultant/fixer for special projects in engineering. This was the period of decline as competitors started to pull away. The team was working as well as it ever had, but we were just too far behind to catch up. I departed in June, sad that such a great team could meet such a bad end. The company was acquired in a fire sale in May the following year. Years later, many of us are still good friends.
  • Apteligent (Acq. Vmw)
    Senior Software Engineer (Platform)
Apteligent (Acq. Vmw) Jan 2014 - Dec 2014
    San Francisco, Ca, Us
Senior software engineer. Implemented OAuth 2 token issuance (for access to our data), first use of SOA at the company, and transactions product (which became "userflows"). It was good to ship a new product. The company changed a lot during this period. My manager Kevan instituted a very professional software engineering culture, emphasizing reviews, maintainability, and test coverage. I learned a great deal about software professionalism, and had my code reviewed by numerous people better than me (Kevan Dunsmore, Keith Dreibelbis, and Sean Hermany). I picked up "Google-flavored" Python during this period -- conservative, simple, object-oriented, clean -- which I still write today.
  • Apteligent (Acq. Vmw)
    Senior Software Engineer (Ops)
Apteligent (Acq. Vmw) May 2013 - Dec 2013
    San Francisco, Ca, Us
Master of automation. Continued stabilizing, monitoring, and improving things. Things went from really hectic to much smoother as our growth slowed, but we were still supporting billions of daily app loads across thousands of app-customers. This period of the company taught me how to work in a well-oiled team: how to get to 99.99% SLAs, how to upgrade things safely, and most important, how to coordinate and communicate about all of it so that we didn't step on each others' toes.
  • Apteligent (Acq. Vmw)
    Technical Operations Lead
Apteligent (Acq. Vmw) Oct 2012 - May 2013
    San Francisco, Ca, Us
Led ops function at very fast-growing app analytics company. During this period, we got into Lyft / Skype / Shazam and grew to something like 500 million global SDK installations. I worked very hard to keep a huge technical infrastructure (hundreds of VM instances, TB of databases, five different languages) monitored / sized / scaled appropriately. This was a hard job with a lot of 2AM outages and long, difficult on-call shifts. This period felt like going to West Point for ops. It was physically demanding, managing hundreds of VM instances myself, with lots of 2AM ssh sessions, scp'ing GB/TB of files around, and dealing with outages at crazy times (7:15AM on Saturday, 1AM Thursday night, 8pm Sunday). It was pretty unhealthy but it was the most intense period of learning I've had in my life.
  • Apteligent (Acq. Vmw)
    Hacker
Apteligent (Acq. Vmw) May 2012 - Oct 2012
    San Francisco, Ca, Us
App analytics. #7 overall hire / #4 engWorked to stabilize things as very young / unprepared company had landed Netflix as a customer ~1wk before I arrived. Got deep into AWS / TCP tuning / Python internals. This was the "nerf guns and messing around" period. It was summer and everyone was enjoying themselves and having a good time. Looking back, there wasn't much urgency or hustle.

  • Goldman Sachs
    Summer Analyst
    Goldman Sachs May 2008 - Jul 2008
    New York, New York, Us
Internship in clearing and settlement during 2008 financial crisis. It wasn't supposed to be as exciting as it was.
  • Baseball Info Systems
    Developer
Baseball Info Systems May 2006 - Jul 2006
First job: getting a book published using BIS's proprietary database of baseball events (doing "data science" before it was called that) to typeset the Bill James Handbook. The movie "Moneyball" profiles the impact the BJH had on major-league baseball, though it came out five years after I did this work (I had no idea how large it would become). Spent second half of summer developing Infield-Outfield-D, one of the first apps to recommend defensive shifts to major league baseball staff. I think the White Sox used it after I left.
