About David Raphael

After efforts to become a silent movie actor fell through (apparently I didn’t quite have the voice). I decided to turn to my second passion – energy. As a qualified engineer I was drawn to the radical innovation in an industry that was arguable the cornerstone of the first industrial revolution; undergoing its own revolution. I qualified with Honours in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Cape Town, and dived straight in to the Renewable Energy industry, working as a Commercial and Industrial Solar Project Developer, developing projects with both rooftop and ground mount PV solutions. I am currently completing my Master in Mechanical Engineering and Renewable Energy at Stellenbosch University part time. On the weekends I like to hike, run and am a fair weather surfer (still not a very good one). I enjoy braais with the boys (and girls), touch rugby on the beach and scuba diving off the East Coast, when I can.Primary SkillsExperienced in: PVSyst (extensive), SolarGIS products such as PV Planner, SketchUp Pro, Forge Solar Glare analysis and Module Optimisation, PV string design, project costing and development, SSEG Municipal application process, Capable of client facing roles, communicating key performance indicators of a project through a succinct solar proposal to meet a client’s internal hurdles.Secondary skills:Motivated to continuously understand latest technological developments, research better methods of implementing tasks, enjoy taking on responsibility and working within a team. Thrive in leadership positions, Perform well in time sensitive situations to the benefit of my employer and clients. Over the last few decades, the energy landscape has changed, with conventional centralised distribution technologies being fast replaced by decentralised renewables. The way we view energy has changed, along with our energy habits.

Listed skills include Public Speaking, Microsoft Office, Project Management, Pvsyst, and 16 others.

Solar Pv Design Engineer

This is where the magic happens. The role of a solar PV design engineer is to understand a client’s specific energy needs and behaviours and engineer, from a preliminary solar concept, a solution which bests provides optimal energy savings, while complying with both regulatory requirements and site-specific technological constraints. The solar design process follows several key stages which include:Engaging with the local electrical supply authority, in an effort to comply with specific regulatory requirements on both a national and regional level for the connection of small scale (solar) embedded generators.Consulting with structural experts to assess the structural integrity of a premises due the additional distributed loading of roof mounted PV systems or the risk of structural failure in high wind conditions to ground mounted solar systems.Developing comprehensive design plans, considering existing roof services, shading and roof obstructions, lightning protection requirements, mounting structure methodologies and, at times, the impact of glare on the surrounding urban environment.Developing a detailed bill of quantities and checking the cost of items against project budgets.Procuring technologically complex and bespoke materials while engaging with other industry experts to conform to industry best practices.Preparing systems with an “end of use” design methodology, improving O&M performance and lowering servicing costs.Troubleshooting tough site-specific conditions and finding innovative solutions to otherwise challenging problems.Ultimately solar design engineers need to adopt a make it work attitude while balancing project costs and client expectations, to deliver a safe, cost effective and appealing solar solution. That’s why Chuck Norris never design solar PV systems

The role of a Solar Project Developer is to build a comprehensive solar business case which can attractively convince a prospective client of the financial benefits of solar power as an alternative to grid power. This process follows a multitude of stages and entails: Establishing a relationship with prospective clients and effectively extract pertinent information from their technical teams/ third party contactors such as electrical billing information, facility meter data, site plans, electrical reticulation information… etcSorting and interpreting meaningful data of the clients facility in order to determine the feasibility of a proposed solar system.Utilising knowledge of current solar technologies to develop a preliminary solar system design.Making use of specialist software packages to determine acceptable solar yield information based the facilities location, orientation and other site-specific parameters.Accurately costing the proposed solar system, considering current exchange rate variances, system hardware costs as well as labour and build rates, the latter associate the relative difficulty of the solar installation.Collating all this information into a precise and aesthetic solar proposal indicating, amongst the project cost-to-build value, benchmark financial indicators such as Client IRR over the plant lifetime, payback period and 1st year ROI.
