Cloud Architect, Spark ServiceIbm Analytics Sep 2015 - Jun 2017Armonk, New York, Ny, UsIBM's Spark Service was a $300M initiative, forming the cornerstone of IBM's Analytics portfolio shift to the cloud; IBM's “analytics operating system”. IBM was competing with DataBricks, Domino Data Lab, and GCP Cloud Datalab. As a cloud architect, I spearheaded IBM's cloud transformation initiative and defined the critical success factors for other cloud services within IBM Analytics.Worked closely with the Spark Service team, Bluemix Containers (Kubernetes) team, and Data Science Experience team. Disassembled Apache Spark into its base components, reassembled as 12-factor cloud-native multi-tenant microservices, and created POC’s on Kubernetes and DC/OS.RESULTS:The creation of a 100% cloud-native Spark Service strategy that aligned with the forthcoming rollout of Bluemix managed Kubernetes, which remediated a major pain point that had historically caused the loss of on-premise sales. -
Software ArchitectZimbra Feb 2014 - Sep 2015Buffalo, New York, UsZimbra is the 3rd largest email & collab platform, hosting 100M mailboxes. It is an integrated suite of ~18 services. Their largest customer, a cable operator, runs it on 1,200 servers. They hired me to design & execute a high availability strategy, because I spent significant time in the email & calendar world for mobile operators, and because I was an early cloud-native practitioner.Led cloud-native transformation, and evangelized the 12 Factor methodology and Docker.Encouraged Scrum adoption by building an Ember.js based “Jira Scrum Board” web front-end to Zimbra's Bugzilla database. -
Software ArchitectGood Technology Feb 2011 - Dec 2013Sunnyvale, Ca, UsConsultant for this premier mobile security company (acquired by BlackBerry) that produced a mobile gateway product and delivered a secure email & calendar app to over half of the fortune 500, and several leading branches of the US government. They hired me to design & execute a high availability strategy.Led a multi-year migration from BDB to MS SQL. Worked with multiple domestic and overseas teams, and with multiple codebases & languages. Drove adoption of design patterns that unlocked the refactoring potential of the codebase.RESULTS:Enabled customer migrations from BDB to their existing SQL Server infrastructure, and a shift of storage HA to the Microsoft partner ecosystem, eliminating 20+ hour BDB log recovery times, and relieving one of Good’s key developers from acting as a DBA. -
Software ArchitectSynchronica May 2006 - 2010Synchronica developed a SyncML Gateway for mobile operators whose feature phones would synchronize e-mails, calendars, and contacts with consumer accounts at Yahoo!, Google, Facebook, Twitter, Exchange, and Domino. They came to me to add e-mail protocol support to their gateway, to address higher powered IMAP-capable feature phones that had “server push” IMAP IDLE support, previously only available on BlackBerry.Licensed my GoodServer e-mail integration framework to Synchronica, and performed a 1-year integration. Then sold the entire GoodServer business to Synchronica, while they also acquired Axis Mobile, another one of my GoodServer licensees.Managed development of e-mail and back-end connectors from the Berlin office, while working with vendors such as Yahoo!, Facebook, Sun Microsystems, Zain, TeliaSonera, and IXI. Represented Synchronica at CalConnect. As of 2010, Sudan had only 3 mobile operators, and all 3 were Synchronica licensees, which means that for a time, I delivered every mobile email to every mobile phone sold to an entire country.

CeoGoodserver 1996 - 2006Produced a Java-based integration platform for IMAP, SMTP, and POP3 e-mail protocols. Established contracts with 18 customers, ranging from mobile operators like BellSouth to software platform companies like Cisco and Nokia. Led development while managing two subcontractors.Delivered the email sever within Cisco Unity Express, and the Nuasis / Intervoice distributed contact center software.Successfully exited by selling to UK-based Synchronica (LSX AIM: SYNC.LN), and embedded GoodServer within their SyncML Gateway, while joining their office in Berlin, Germany. Managed connector development, and Sun Microsystems's license of Synchronica, adding mobile synchronization to Sun Java System Communication Suite which hosted 240M mailboxes.

Investor, Manager Of Platform & ToolsZland Dec 1998 - Jun 2001ZLand was an early small business ASP with a 200-person staff and an innovative franchise model. Joined as an investor and development manager responsible for designing and executing a migration from Lotus Domino to Java.

Software Development ManagerMetainfo 1996 - 1996UsMetaInfo's founder purchased a port of Bind (DNS) for Windows NT, productized it within a year by adding web-based administration, and thereby launched a $15M/year product that enabled an internet presence for all the Windows servers that came on-line during the growth of Microsoft's Windows Server business in the 90's. Microsoft responded with a version of DNS built into every Windows Server, but the funny thing is that not many people ever took Microsoft's version seriously, and so it never seemed to hurt business, in spite of everyone's anxiety. As a consultant for a client who shared office space with MetaInfo, I would cross their path, and eventually joined as a development manager during the delivery of DNS 2.0 for NT and Sendmail with POP3 for NT 1.0, later acquired by Check Point Software and Software.com. -
ConsultantApplication Methods Jan 1994 - Nov 1995Application Methods had a special relationship with Borland, and produced the sample applications that shipped with many of their desktop database & development tools products. I moved from L.A. to Seattle to join, after answering their short newspaper ad that mentioned a small firm seeking a database programmer.Performed small business consulting with Paradox, Delphi, VB, MS SQL, and InterBase. Largest projects included a bill of materials for a large machine manufacturer, and an audit tool used by Alaska's largest grocery store chain that reverse engineered call plans and automatically disputed vast sums of telco over-charges.We hosted Microsoft vs Borland product showdowns, and were active in local user groups where we generated leads for the consulting practice. I pioneered the use of Lotus Notes for project management with remote clients, and gave an introduction to Lotus Notes at Jeff Winchell's "PC Database Summit 95", where I presented alongside other luminaries including Joe Celko. Taught Petzold-style Windows C programming and Windows TCP/IP to Unix system programmers at Boeing.
