Open source tools were used to build a light-weight and flexible online platform that integrated with internal SaaS applications. These systems processed the lead, dispatched the order and invoiced the customer without manual intervention.For the Media sector, the platform integrated with major national web media content providers, offering their readers the opportunity to license online content automatically.In the private education sector, institutions were able to buy new Licenses and renew quickly online, opening up a new market of over $6m in revenue with little overhead and operational costs.New Development PracticesJava was a new platform introduced into the organisation, quite different than the incumbent technologies. This allowed for many new practices to be introduced. These included test driven development that had an immediate impact, reducing the number of defects in production. New metrics were introduced that measured the increase in quality improvements in the Quality Assurance Team.Also a new repository management scheme was as well as a continuous integration policy that allowed for better Release Management. A weekly automated, deployment cycle was established to replace lengthy bi-monthly routines that were executed over a whole weekend. This substantially reduced time to market for new initiatives, particularly those focused on the education market.
