So2 Operations And Plans, Land Equipment Operating Centre (Deputy Director)

Abbey Wood, Bristol

I am part of a team responsible for the current and future equipment needs of armed forces on operations. My main responsibilities include planning the redeployment and recuperation of land equipment as the Army withdraws from Afghanistan; and being the key liaison officer with the Joint Headquarters in Afghanistan, finding solutions to complex land equipment engineering issues in this fast-moving environment. I am also leading on the implementation of a new engineering and asset management system, JAMES. Of note, I have:• Driven good behaviour on the implementation of the JAMES engineering and asset system, considering the commercial cost of capturing information and understanding its use to the Army.• Built a relationship of trust with those working in the theatre of war by listening to their technical needs and consistently providing them with the best possible solutions in the timeframe available.

Oct 2011 - Nov 2012

Adjutant (Private Secretary To The Managing Director)

Ipswich, United Kingdom

7 Air Assault Battalion is a 750-strong engineering organisation providing direct support for both land and aviation equipment. As Adjutant I was working at the heart of a dynamic organisation. My main responsibilities were resourcing, personnel and disciplinary issues (including legal matters) for both military and civilian staff. My key achievements included:• Preparing the Battalion for deployment to Afghanistan, by ensuring appropriate manning and administration, and overseeing military training, particularly the development of junior officers.• Managing two particularly sensitive disciplinary procedures, including handling internal communications, the departure from the Army of the people concerned and other pastoral issues.

Aug 2009 - Sep 2010

Officer Commanding (Senior Engineer And General Manager)

Tidworth, United Kingdom

Appointed to the challenging role of Officer Commanding of a Light Aid Detachment (which provides dedicated engineering and logistical support to Army field units), I led 82, later rising to 115, individuals with a fleet of up to 90 armoured and 250 wheeled vehicles. In addition to general management duties, I was the Senior Engineer of a multi-disciplinary engineering team, working on reactive and planned maintenance. I was also an executive member of the planning team and provided technical and tactical advice and guidance on the use of equipment in the field. My key achievements included:• Bringing in the Technical Evaluation team and making my own evaluations of the team to identify failings. As a result, I rewrote the engineering management system to deliver improved efficiency and availability across the fleet.• Using the flexibility of the team’s particular circumstances to offer young tradesmen responsibilities beyond their rank. By carefully identifying who would thrive on additional responsibility, I dealt with being under-resourced and reversed twelve resignations.• Gaining the confidence of the Commanding Officer as a result of these successes which led to me being made the lead planner for logistics within the organisation.

Jul 2007 - Aug 2009

General Support Company 2Nd In Command (Deputy Director)

Osnabrück, Germany

Newly commissioned, I was posted to Osnabrück, Germany. My main responsibilities were planning the delivery of technical and military training and upholding engineering standards for an organisation of up to 190 people together with the day-to-day management of the Company. I also served briefly as the Company’s Welfare Officer. My key achievements included:• Delivering success on a large winter repair and rehabilitation programme conducted over three months in Canada and planned using Lean planning processes over five months in Poland. • Working as deputy director of a Company of around 100 multi-disciplinary engineers delivering the winter repair programme with assignments ranging from engine changes to in-depth diagnostics and repairs on electronic and optronic equipment. • With a team of up to 10 people, leading the planning for the Company’s deployment to Afghanistan, setting milestones and preparing people with single and multi-disciplinary military and technical skills.• Co-ordinating live operational support with discrete training packages prior to deployment for a Company of 80 in Germany and 180 in Canada and working with a team of four other officers.

Mar 2005 - Aug 2007

Soldier And Non-Commissioned Officer

Uk, Germany, Canada And Oman

I joined REME as a gunfitter and progressed through the ranks, receiving my commission in early 2005. Highlights from the early phase of my career include:• Working in the Sultanate of Oman as a Loan Service Officer leading their wholly Arabic technical inspection team for two years, working with a number of civilian contractors, including Vickers Defence. This was my last job before receiving my commission.• Working as a liaison officer at Search Management and Recruitment during a trial to outsource all Army recruitment. My role was to advise on how to best attract high quality candidates into an engineering career in the Army.
