About David Reynolds

For the last 6 years I have been studying and working on a variety of jobs and projects over a diverse range of mathematics, statistics and computer related topics. In 2011 I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of Queensland, one of Australia's leading universities. I have since spent time taking additional courses and working as a research assistant and freelance developer. Today I am aiming to further develop my skills in machine learning and data mining, my goal is to find work as a data scientist.During my time as a student at the University of Queensland my studies included pure mathematical analysis, scientific computing, statistics and machine learning. I have strong skills in several programming languages used in scientific computing and data analysis such as Matlab, R and Python, specifically Numpy and Scipy. I have also developed skills in business analysis and operations research.Having worked on several interesting projects in the field of image analysis and operations research I have a solid understanding of scientific computing. During a three month scholarship with Australia's preeminent scientific research organisation, the CSIRO, I implemented my own version of a new image segmentation algorithm using R and in-house image analysis tools. Following from this project I worked with a computational neuroscience laboratory, developing automated image analysis tools to help them process and analyse extremely large data sets of image sequences, this time using Matlab. The software solution I developed included a graphical user interface, providing excellent usability and data visualisation capability. The total data analysis throughput has now greatly been increased for this project.Recently I have been working on a small data mining and process optimisation project involving finding better ways to match customer orders to production equipment for an Australian pharmaceutical packaging company.

    Working with a computational Neuroscience laboratory at the Queensland Brain Institute I was in charge of developing interactive image analysis software in Matlab which could automatically trace and measure developing nerve fibres in time-lapse image sequences. The problem involved dealing with large image based data sets and implementing a customised algorithm which drew upon different disciplines of applied mathematics and computer science, such as differential geometry, graph theory and statistics. The outcome was a significant improvement in data analysis throughput for these particular experiments, compared to the mostly manual process that was employed previously.

The role involved using company data sets to generate a viable production schedule in excel, as well as running and analysing database reports to monitor and troubleshoot production problems. Additionally, I was required to set up and run a statistical analysis of production performance using a combination of the R language and Excel.

    The CSIRO is Australia's preeminent scientific research organisation, conducting research in a broad range of areas including mathematics and statistics. During my time as a vacation scholar with the CSIRO Mathematics, Informatics and Statistics group I was responsible for researching and implementing a state of the art image segmentation technique known as the stochastic watershed transform. The project involved processing image data in the R programming language, using CSIRO's own in-house image analysis software developed in C and R. The algorithm consisted of repeated application of a common image segmentation method in a stochastic process, followed by a statistical analysis of results.A key aspect of the project was to attend a conference in Sydney and present my research to fellow vacation scholars from around Australia. Additionally I gave a presentation of my results and findings to the Sydney based image analysis group.
