About David Rhyner
With a Bachelor's and Master's in Biochemistry and Organic Chemistry from ETH Zürich, I am currently pursuing my PhD under the supervision of Prof. Roland Riek. My research is dedicated to understanding protein aggregation, a key factor in neurodegenerative diseases.The Challenge:Protein aggregation is a hallmark of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's, and ALS, which affect nearly 15% of the global population. However, few realize that protein aggregation is a natural process happening constantly within our cells. Under normal conditions, healthy cells have sophisticated mechanisms to degrade misfolded or aggregated proteins before they cause harm.My Research Focus:Using advanced Cryo-electron Microscopy (CryoEM), I study the structural properties of highly amyloidogenic small peptide aggregates and the alpha-synuclein protein, a key player in Parkinson’s disease. My ultimate goal is to contribute to the development of new therapeutic strategies targeting protein aggregation-related disorders.
