David is a Principal of John Canning Co. and its subsidiary Canning Liturgical Arts. He is a Professional Associate of AIC (American Institute for Conservation) and an expert in historic decoration preservation.David is responsible for the the expansion of John Canning Co. to include plaster restoration and stabilization. Because decorative finishes are only as durable as their substrate, he saw an opportunity to provide owners with the best quality possible by taking responsibility for surfaces as well.The most comprehensive plaster and decoration project to date was in the newly constructed, award-winning National Shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Creating the ornamental plaster and decorative finishes for the classical-style interior under Dave’s management is considered one of the company’s crowning achievements and in his words “a once in a lifetime project.”Managing projects is also one of David’s strengths. His understanding of the decorative arts informs his scheduling and pricing. He prides himself on delivering projects on time and on budget. That understanding is a result of his 3-year apprenticeship in decorative painting and the influence and example set by his mentor and company founder, John Canning.Large-scale projects executed under the strictest historic conservation oversight are a specialty. David has managed and successfully delivered projects at Virginia State Capitol, the Pennsylvania State Capitol, Radio City Music Hall, the US Capitol and Treasury Building, University of Virginia (UVA) Rotunda, and the War Memorial Opera in San Francisco.Other projects of interesting distinction:Oldest building – 1729, Old South Meeting House, Boston, MALogistical challenge – Doris Duke’s Shangri La, Honolulu, HWMost public project – 750,000 people per day pass under the Sky Mural at Grand Central Terminal, NYC
