Principal Data Integration Analyst

This role was created to address a significant challenge facing the business. OA was formed out of the acquisition of several businesses in the Ad-Tech space. Consequently, there were numerous disparate systems, databases and database technologies. It was hard to get a view of end-to-end data. There were a large number of data challenges such as inaccuracies, duplication, missing data, and so forth. It was hard to determine exactly what products customers were using and what their respective rate cards were. This was leading to invoicing and royalty payment inaccuracies and loss of revenue caused by confusion over exactly what was “live” on partner platforms. I built a Data Warehouse to ingest data from all of the disparate systems so that I could identify the “truth”. I then worked with different teams in the business such as “FinTech”, Revenue Operations, Partner Managers, “Activation Data” to help them work through their respective issues. Some key benefits resulting from my work were:• A huge reduction in data discrepancies• Many data gaps were identified and plugged• Duplicates were identified and removed• Defunct products were identified and removed from active campaigns and strategies whilst replacement products were added in to ensure the continued profitability of the campaigns.• There was a significant increase in invoice and royalty payment accuracy.

Bi & Data Infrastructure Senior Manager

Cambridge, United Kingdom

Grapeshot was purchased by the Advertising unit of Oracle Corporation. Initially known as Oracle Data Cloud it subsequently became known as Oracle Advertising (OA). I took over the running of OA Finance and Sales Business Intelligence operations. My remit extended from Grapeshot-specific data to encompass the data from the other businesses that Oracle had acquired. Primarily Bluekai and Datalogix which were both advertising businesses based around selling “Audience” data. My team expanded to incorporate 2 members of the U.S. team and one from the India-based team. Due to being part of Oracle, we had to terminate our Tableau and Alteryx products and switch to Oracle-owned technologies. We migrated our BI set-up over to Oracle Data Integrator for ETL and OBIEE for the reporting side. In terms of our key customers, they continued to be Sales “Go to Market” teams and Finance.

Director Of Business Intelligence

Cambridge, United Kingdom

I was recruited to establish a BI function at Grapeshot. The company was growing fast but lacked mature processes around data management, financial reporting, invoice generation and sales analytics. I immediately set to work migrating the disparate spreadsheet-based data into a central MySQL database. I procured Tableau as a flexible web-based data visualisation tool and Alteryx as an ETL tool to facilitate automation and cross-checking of corporate data as it was loaded into the BI database. I worked closely with the Sales and Finance functions to understand how I could best serve their needs. The business needed the ability to forecast revenues and determine regional Sales targets. The Finance team needed significant help in processing the billing data to produce customer invoices. Appropriate solutions were duly created. I grew the team to 6 people. Half of the team specialised in front-end data visualisations and half in the ETL and database design side of operations. The BI solution put powerful, accurate, timely insights into the hands of the Sales teams dramatically improving their efficiency and their ability to increase sales. Similarly, the Finance team gained significant efficiency in their ability to generate invoices quickly and accurately.

Bi Manager

Cambridge, Uk

I led a team of 3 experienced BI Developers working with SQL Server. The team worked with the business to understand the requirements from which data models were developed. I led the Project Management and Business Analysis ensuring stakeholder communications and expectations were tightly managed along with a clear scope. Projects were run as 2-week Agile Development Sprints.Redgate requested that I develop a Data Strategy. This was accepted and implemented. Examples of my achievements:• I drove the creation of company-wide data definitions to ensure consistency of performance measurement across the business• I worked closely with my BI Developers and key departments, from Sales and Marketing through to Product Support and Finance, to establish business rules for how to transform transactional data into dimensional models • I facilitated the centralisation of Data and Reports into a single portal to aid data discovery and avoid duplication of effort or multiple versions of the truth• I worked with the business to validate that the correct things were being measured, that good\bad performance was understood and that business processes were geared up to ensure action was taken based on the data analyses• I worked with the business to ensure different sources of data had clear owners (Data Stewards) who were responsible for ensuring data quality for our business systems at the point of entry• I delivered several new data analysis projects. Key examples being:o A new Sales Model to track full attribution of revenue to Sales and Opportunities coming through from Salesforce CRM. This has been hugely transformational in terms of allowing much deeper analysis revealing underperformance, inefficiencies and successes in the sales process. o A marketing funnel data analysis model. This combined related data from Hubspot (our Inbound Marketing tool) and Salesforce CRM. This model was able to highlight inefficiencies and flaws in our sales and marketing processes.

Mi Manager

Cambridge, United Kingdom

While working in the position of DBA Manager at Play.com I took on the Project Management lead for a new Data Warehouse project. As the project gained momentum and broadened in scope it was decided to form a dedicated team. I transitioned from the DBA Manager role into the MI Manager role leading the newly formed MI (Management Information) Team. The Data Warehouse was entirely bespoke, initially built in collaboration with Rittman Mead, one of the leading UK BI consultancies in the UK. It was based on Oracle’s OBIEE solution and ran on Oracle ExaData servers. The initial DW specification was sponsored by the Finance function therefore the data models were based on financial insights around sales and stock. Subsequently new models extended the scope to cover Play.com’s marketplace business model and a Customer Insight Data Mart. The introduction of the Data Warehouse was transformational in delivering very powerful and flexible self-service data analysis directly to business users. The company was able to make quicker decisions with a high degree of trust and confidence in the accuracy of the data. Previously reporting was achieved through a high number of ad hoc bespoke report requests. My responsibilities extended to:- Team Management- Project Management for all MI developments- Working with my team and business sponsors to ensure Reporting\BI requirements were accurately captured- Working with my team to transform business requirements into design specifications- Reviewing hardware\software to ensure systems were appropriately maintained and upgraded.- OBIEE installation, configuration, troubleshooting, report\dashboard creation, simple RPD design.- Delivering ad hoc PL\SQL based reports against the OLTP databases.I would always try to promote the message of Business Intelligence for such things as KPI analysis, trending, exception reports and ‘actionable intelligence’.

Dba Manager

Cambridge, United Kingdom

I managed the DBA Team comprising myself and 5 production DBAs. I was a very hands-on technical manager taking the role of Lead Oracle Specialist in addition to managing the team. At the time of joining Play.com the company had just migrated from SQL Server to Oracle and needed help stabilising the new infrastructure and understanding how to effectively manage an Oracle environment. I was brought in to drive the transition.Notable achievements during my time in the role included:- Migrating the hardware from 32bit to 64bit to provide stability and the ability to address much more memory for performance and scalability- Migrating the hardware from commodity servers to a high end IBM-AIX server- Introducing Physical Standby servers to provide a rapid Disaster Recovery and High Availability solution- Introducing a Logical Standby database to offload reporting workload from the production server- Building and Maintaining all Development, Test and Production hardware- Introducing a resilient backup solution and regularly testing the backups by performing scheduled test restore\recovery- Ongoing performance monitoring and capacity planning to ensure consistent performance, stability and scalability- Collaborating with the developers to ensure efficient SQL and PL\SQL code
