I'm in the final phase of my career, leading a global 501(c)3 nonprofit, the DCRO Risk Governance Institute.Over a nearly 40-year career, I've served as a board member, chief executive officer, and entrepreneur and led risk management programs at three different companies. In those risk leadership roles, I’ve actively managed complex, highly risk-sensitive financial portfolios in the tens of billions of dollars in size, integrated risk knowledge with enterprise strategic plans, and had risk oversight for the complete suite of public mutual funds at one of the largest banks in the United States. I led the development of the first firmwide risk management program in the mortgage banking business (1993), was named an inaugural member of the Risk Who's Who Society (2007), received the PRMIA Higher Standard Award (2008), was one of the winners of the inaugural M-Prize for management innovation (2010), and earned permission to use the Qualified Risk Director® designation (2021). As a Qualified Risk Director®, my knowledge and experience are applied at the board level to organizations dealing with rapid growth, internationalization, challenging and changing environments, and those needing directors with risk governance credentials (by regulation or desire). My experience is with large companies, mid-size companies (integrated with large parent companies), and true entrepreneurial start-ups. I've served at private, publicly held, nonprofit, and public/government-owned entities. My books Governance Reimagined: Organizational Design, Risk, and Value Creation and The Board Member's Guide to Risk have both been translated into multiple languages, and God’s Portfolio: An Examination of the I, the We, the All (and then some) was published in 2024. I have been quoted in the Financial Times, on Bloomberg, in Time Magazine, the Wall Street Journal, and other leading publications. I serve on the editorial board of the Journal of Risk Management in Financial Institutions, where I have been an invited Special Editor of three issues.I've been fortunate to work with colleagues on six continents to set a higher standard for professional risk education and governance, both as the co-founder and leader of a global professional association that grew from a start-up to having members in over 180 countries and through the DCRO Institute, a peer collaboration among board members and C-suite executives, where I am a faculty member in addition to Chief Executive Officer. I'm honored to have been invited to speak at more than 200 events on five continents.

Qualified Risk Director®The Dcro Institute Oct 2021 - PresentGlobal Organization, OoHaving spent the first half of my career building firmwide and portfolio-specific risk management programs for multiple companies, in 2002 my work shifted to establishing and implementing global best practices for risk governance at the board level and the general practices of risk management. I add value to board strategic discussions through my successful experience building new programs and organizations, strategic business planning with a dynamic vision of the future, and by helping to establish or improve effective governance structures for positive risk-taking. Such structures aim to foster innovation, resilience, and an increased ability to realize goals - in other words, to take risk confidently. I have an extensive network of board colleagues worldwide with whom I have worked, have traveled to nearly 40 countries, and can draw upon experiences in for-profit, non-profit, and governmental organizations. One of my innovations - the idea of Risk Capital as a Commons - was named a winner of one of the inaugural M-Prize awards for management innovation in the category of "Reinventing Leadership."Visit www.davidrkoenig.com to learn more. -
