Engineer responsible for sustaining existing product lines with cross-functional work including firmware, software, and project management. The product lines involve several electricity metering products such as the CENTRON, CENTRON II, SENTINEL, and newer products such as CENTRON Gen5 and new Polyphase versions of this line.Firmware development includes both bare metal embedded development in C/C++ on a variety of both MSP430 and Atmel microprocessors, and RTOS-based application development on custom ASICs with various processor architectures. Most of the work involves fixing issues on legacy products, researching code and documentation to explain behavior and design choices, and writing new code to integrate with new electronic components or board changes in order to keep existing product lines in production.Software development primarily involves maintaining PC-PRO+ Advanced, a large software suite used to connect to all legacy metering devices. and newer products such as CENTRON II/III Gen5. This includes bugfixes for issues with legacy meters, as well as new development to support upcoming product lines. The software includes both newer components written primarily in C#.NET, and older components that utilize VB6, legacy Microsoft C++, Java, and other platforms. Additionally, I write custom tools to automate engineering work and testing mostly using C# and the .NET platform.Project Management experience has been varied, typically involving pushing sustaining engineering projects through internal SDLC processes that have changed 5 times since I first started this kind of work. Some of these are short-lived test-effort type of projects, and others have been multi-year longer-term projects that involve collaboration with more departments and involve more upstream reporting to management. Our processes primarily use MS Project, Sharepoint, and custom internal tools.
Responsible for maintenance and development of main software suite for control of custom environmental instrumentation. Tasks include bug fixing, feature development, documentation, and build/version management. Overarching task involves the incorporation of multiple procedural applications into a single application with solid object-oriented design.
Member of R&D team tasked to development of computer-based radiological monitors* Sole developer of software suite controlling the state-of-the-art Surface Contamination Monitor model IV, including a underlying SQL Server relational database along with a suite of utilities used for controlling the equipment, configuring the equipment for custom usage, producing a variety of reports with minimal user interaction, and generating legacy binary files for use with previous generations of software.* Created multiple utilities for the SS-Series line of products for Gamma Spectroscopy, including translation utilities to convert to multiple formats, reporting software for various projects, and applications that assist with testing and calibration.* Assisted in development of database-backed document indexing and search services, including web-based interfaces.* Created many small utilities to automate business and radiological survey processes, saving employees hundreds of hours over the course of a large project.* Was tasked to the 3-Building Large-Scale Decontamination and Decommissioning Project as a data processing specialist. In addition to radiological data processing responsibilities, developed a database-backed software solution to allow managers throughout several departments and teams to keep track of tens of thousands of individual radiological survey units, replacing the method of manual spreadsheet entry. Provided ability to automate generation of metrics reports, enabling project managers to quickly view the status of survey efforts, and easily predict milestone and completion dates. Assisted in creation of software to generate color maps representing radiological contamination for areas several acres in dimension, at a resolution of 10x10 cm pixels.* Assisted in various IT-oriented tasks such as maintaining linux servers, maintaining source code repositories, and assisted with corporate website features.
