I worked with David Grier, and studied optical forces in complex beams of light. Essentially we focused a powerful laser through a microscope objective and observed how the light moves tiny beads, which are about the size of a bacteria. We discovered that it is possible to use the polarization of the light to gain greater control over the optical forces. In addition we studied how light can not only push but also can pull small objects. We made such tractor beams on the microscale and are interested in understanding how to create long range tractor beams.

I worked with Haruo Kojima and studied solid He4 at low temperatures. We measured the effect of He3 impurities to better understand behavior that was thought to be caused by supersolidity.
