Board Member And Project Lead For Establishing Rural Libraries In Northern Malawi (Volunteer)Books For Development (Formerly Known As Good Steward Global Initiative) Jan 2014 - Present+ In most of rural Malawi and Botswana there are just no books, or no easy access to books, and information in general. A profound “book famine” rages.+ Curated and shipped about 35,000 books to Northern Malawi which are then used to establish community and school libraries in rural areas. A local NGO facilitates the community sensitization and monitoring of the libraries.+ Books cover the widest possible range of topics and interests and are aimed at all ages and reading levels.+ Specialty public health titles and health guides form part of a mandatory set of books for each library. Titles spanning women’s health, children, disabilities, dentistry, health education, HIV, and environmental health.+ Fund raising, grant applications, communications, and project management in the USA and Malawi.+ Helped organize and execute an annual fund raising luncheon gala at The Houston Club. Approached and hired the keynote speakers – notable authors with an African connection.+ Coordinated and led group trips of 10 adult volunteers to Malawi for the purpose of library building.+ 20 community and school libraries established so far. More are planned in Malawi and Botswana in 2022/2023.
