I am an experienced patent attorney specializing in providing my clients with legal services related to biotechnology/life science inventions, including patent application drafting, U.S. and foreign patent prosecution, opinions concerning patentability, freedom to operate and infringement, patent licensing, post-grant proceedings, general patent counseling, strategic planning, and trade secrets. In addition to having over 15 years of experience in intellectual property law, I have acquired substantial expertise in the life sciences while pursuing a Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology at Duke University and later while conducting post-doctoral research in genetic engineering at North Carolina State University and while leading a research program at BASF Corporation. I have provided patent-related legal assistance to large, medium, and small-sized companies, universities, and non-profit institutions concerning a wide range of technologies including medical diagnostic tests, engineered DNA-binding proteins, protein expression systems, transgenic plants, and other agricultural biotechnologies including non-transgenic, herbicide resistant plants, plant transformation methods, insecticidal proteins, biofuels, and bioplastics. Using the combination of my extensive experience in patent law, my broad knowledge of the life sciences, and my experience working as a scientist at a company in the life science industry, I am able to provide my clients with both legal and practical advice on protecting and exploiting their intellectual property rights in the U.S. and abroad.
