I retired from the Air Force after 20 years as a Flight Surgeon and Public Health Policy Expert in 2015. As a Flight Surgeon and Flight Commander, I was tasked with both primary care responsibilities and over time, increasing leadership and policy roles. Throughout my time in the Air Force, I was directly responsible for the health and medical needs of the flying squadron to which I was attached and their families both at home and in deployed settings. Ultimately, as Chief of Aerospace Medicine, I had responsibility not only for the clinical and preventive care of my flying and special operations units, but also for overseeing the provision of medical care, readiness, and wellness programs for the entire base and at overseas deployed locations. Immediately after retirement, I worked as the Assistant Director of Public Health in Fulton County and as a Locum Tenens physician. My most recent position was as a Medical Director for Centene working on prior authorizations, grievances, appeals reviews and care coordination. In that position, all of the Medical Directors also were responsible for working at least one day a week in clinical practice.
