Senior Software Engineer

Current

Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

Dec 2020 - Present

Principal Engineer

Sail Funding

Sydney, Australia

Sail offers small SME loans. I am in a small team that maintains and extends a proprietary small business lending platform for internal use. The platform is written in JavaScript and TypeScript, and comprises several Node.js containers connected by an AMQP bus in Red Hat's OpenShift environment, using Protocol Buffers for RPC and serialising messages, MongoDB for storage, and React for the front end. There are a number of integrations with external services such as ActiveCampaign, Mailchimp, Mandrill, Slack, and Capital (a financial servicing platform from Interfi Systems). Major libraries used include Mongoose and Inversify.• I wrote the core of the integration to the Capital platform, helped migrate loan data from the previous platform onto the new one, and created tools to allow accurate batch processing of transactions across the migration seam for reconciliation and accounting.• I created a component to assist in credit decisioning, implemented in JavaScript in a pure functional style using the Sanctuary library.• I simplified, refactored, and added to existing unit tests to remove inter-test and timing dependencies and improve coverage.• I simplified the build configuration to remove some concurrency issues and make the process clearer.• I configured OpenShift builds and deployments to be able to install libraries from private code repositories, a feature not available with the default configuration.

Jan 2019 - Dec 2020

Principal Engineer

[24]7.ai offers multi-channel, AI-enhanced customer contact solutions to other enterprises. My work in the engineering team involved several roles:• I developed multilingual demo applications for virtual assistants to showcase the possibilities for customer contact in this channel for [24]7 enterprise clients. In particular, I wrote a JavaScript "meta-application" for the Google Assistant using the Actions API, OAuth 2.0 for authorisation and integrating with the [24]7 AI environment to provide client-specific applications for home devices. This was deployed on a Node.js container in [24]7's own cloud via a build/deploy pipeline involving Jenkins and Chef, behind Apigee. I also assisted with the Amazon Alexa version of the same application. Validation and testing of the API used Postman.• I supported the speech science team in an evaluation of several vendors' speech-to-text and text-to-speech offerings by creating tools to automate experiments and display results graphically. This involved a mix of Unix shell scripts, JavaScript programs, and web pages using JQuery and D3.• Because of my background in SIP and C++, I consulted for other engineering teams working on projects in these areas.

Feb 2018 - Jan 2019

Software Engineer

West Interactive

Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

In 2010, Holly was bought by West Interactive to form part of their automated communications platform.

2010 - Feb 2018

Senior Software Engineer

Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

Holly developed a highly scalable, standards-compliant IVR platform with innovative virtualisation features, supporting DTMF and automated speech interaction for telephony applications. The code base is C/C++, deployed to both Sun/Solaris and x86/Linux.• I maintained the Holly VoiceXML interpreter, originally a VoiceXML 1.0 voice browser that I successfully reworked and managed through the VoiceXML Forum certification program for VoiceXML 2.0/2.1. I also added a new interface for automated outbound mass-calling campaigns, to support, for example, community warning services. For testing this interface I created a tool in Erlang to simulate a campaign manager, able to provide an arbitrary load and report results.• I focused especially on the call control layer, designing and being the primary developer of an interpreter for CCXML, a language structured around soft real-time asynchronous event handlers for expressing advanced telephony applications, particularly those involving dialog systems such as the Holly Voice Platform.• I implemented details of SIP signalling, including the SIP REGISTER method, and secure SIP communication.• I implemented audio encryption to support FIPS 140-2 level 1 requirements.• I was heavily involved in standards compliance, being consulted frequently on interpretation of and adherence to IETF, W3C, and ITU-T standards.• I took primary responsibility for configuration and build management, where I deployed and managed the Subversion version control system and processes around its use, including integration with the Atlassian Jira issue tracker and Atlassian Bamboo CI service. I also instituted the use of the Gunit testing framework to improve code quality.

May 2004 - Feb 2018

Software Engineer

Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

Open Telecommunications developed standards-based software switches running on Sun Solaris. The development platform was primarily C++ on Linux and Windows. Explicit design and documentation was emphasised, using Rational Rose and Microsoft Word. I was involved in:• designing and implementing call control functionality for services such as Call Waiting and Call Diversion using the Parlay APIs;• designing, documenting, and implementing an interface adaptor to third-party Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) stacks, to support all types of SIP endpoints (including phones and other switches);• implementing a Media Gateway Control Protocol stack;• designing and documenting an object-oriented interface for subscriber data, and implementing adaptors for an XML representation and a proprietary real-time database.

2001 - 2003 ~2 yrs

Software Engineer

Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

As part of a large ISO-9001 certified team developing Telstra's intelligent network (IN) platforms, my responsibilities included:• maintaining and extending a large C++ code base with Versant Object DB storage for real-time IN services such as prepaid calling cards and 1300 information lines;• extending an internally-developed language for describing statecharts;• writing Perl scripts for automated testing;• designing and implemented the back end of a prototype web application for a Telstra innovation team.
