At Coudert Brothers, I focused on international taxation.

I joined Brobeck after government service. As Brobeck's first lateral partner in 30 years, I replaced three tax partners, who had focused on international tax, employee benefits, and corporate taxation.

My title was International Tax Counsel and Director of the Office of International Tax Affairs. I worked on legislation, regulations and rulings and went around the world negotiating tax treaties.

I was the principal Treasury Department spokesman for the legislation that became ERISA.

I was Debevoise's first summer associate in 1962. I joined them in September of 1964. After a few years of general practice, I concentrated on taxation, including international tax and employee benefits.

I participated in several important trials, including the first trial charging Roy Cohn with perjury and obstruction of justice. The jury was discharged after a week of deliberation because a juror's father died. In the second trial, he was found not guilty. I also participated in a major anti-trust trial, concluding that Kennecott Copper violated the.
