Senior Vice President Of Engineering, Resources
Responsible for engineering analysis and data strategy of upstream investment group. Revolutionizing legacy workflows and investor perspectives on well performance and production forecasting, quantification of uncertainty, and upstream asset valuation. Building research ideas into business value generating products and services. Lead reservoir engineering, data science, data engineering, and developer team to develop a proprietary non-op management platform and support efforts of broader ARM organization and various business units.
Vice President, Reservoir Engineering
Responsible for all engineering aspects of asset valuation for bids to acquire non-operating working interests totaling over $2B.Design, development, and implementation of technical evaluation platform for basin-wide valuation of oil & gas acreage.Generated and maintained database of three stream (major phase, GOR/CGR, WOR/WGR) production forecasts for every unconventional well in the Delaware and Midland basins. Forecasts were generated using proprietary probabilistic Bayesian regression code base as well as spatial-basis hierarchical regression to impute missing attributes with offset wells in same landing zone. Developed novel universal kriging methodology for type curve construction unique to each landing zone at quarter section level resolution. Constructed meta type curves via DSU aggregation of quarter section type curves for valuation of undeveloped acreage based upon geospatial intersection with remaining development locations. Technical responsibilities and products include:- back-end database design via SQL Server and PostgreSQL- high-performance multithread/multiprocess numerical processing- machine learning evaluation & interpretation of public well data, including time-rate forecasting of production data- management of GIS geometry/geography database objects (structure grid, legal outlines, well line strings, lease polygons, etc.)- internal RESTful API for microservices- Slack bot development- front-end dashboard development- task management via Apache Airflow
Sr. Staff Reservoir Engineer, Data Engineering & Analytics
Founding member of Data Engineering & Analytics team as part of Apache’s digital transformation efforts. Developed documentation encoding best practices and standard kit toolset for collaborative work on internal code base and git repositories.Performed analysis of GPS track data from lease operator company vehicles as part of initiative to improve safety by reduction of preventable vehicle incidents. Visualized track data using high-performance visualization library to render millions of records across the Permian Basin. Developed program with templated reports and customizable configuration files to automate daily reporting of artificial lift classification project. Daily reports communicated pump state to engineers and lease operators as part of project to develop daily dynamic routing for lease operators based upon [per-well] need to reduce miles driven and increase time spent on location.Developed Excel add-in to construct templates of daily plant statement spreadsheets sent by Egypt Region, which contained no standard data table format. Template captured schema(s) required to find and extract relevant data items. Templates are used to automatically process any number of daily statements, eliminating a time consuming process of transcribing data by hand. Extracted data is automatically uploaded into Hive system to allow SQL-like querying of flat files to enable pulling data into Spotfire for analysis. Developed Spotfire dashboard for dynamic filtering and regression of Oil vs. WOR function for Egypt reservoir engineering team. Included feature to export and import forecasts, as well as perform regression at well-level and total field-level.Developed website using Angular2 to communicate data items currently available in corporate data library as part of data virtualization efforts. Website categorized data catalogue by relevance to job role, e.g. drilling engineer vs production engineer vs geoscientist.
Sr. Staff Reservoir Engineer, Exploration Evaluation
Global technical lead for project characterization for Apache's corporate portfolio model. Conducted strategic analysis of annual capital spend of $4-10 Bn and advised on maintaining neutral cash flow during challenging commodity price environment.Coached operating business units on exploration strategy, piloting planning & evaluation, and full-cycle evaluation of complex, multi-scenario conventional exploration plays and frontier unconventional plays. Consult with petrotechnical staff for quantification of uncertainty, correlation & dependency, and construction of multiple target probabilistic analyses of both conventional & unconventional assets. Perform value-of-information analyses, facility sizing exercises, value-driven well spacing exercises, and sensitivity evaluation using real-options.Mentored engineers in Apache's Engineering Development Program. Focus of learning on decision making, forecasting science, and risk analysis grounded rigorously in topics of statistics & probability, Bayesian statistics, Monte Carlo simulation, decision trees, value of information, & economic modeling.Created original Bayesian workflow for the evaluation of unconventional resources. Created value & decision-based unconventional resource exploration model for full-cycle economic calculation, accounting for uncertainty in costs & well performance, imperfect information from appraisal results, and risk tolerance for false positives / false negatives.Published 7 technical papers on subjects of production forecasting in unconventional reservoirs, decision-focused capital project economic characterization, and the practice of portfolio management based upon the application of these technologies and topics internally.Invented software for probabilistic production data analysis using machine learning for statistical estimation of future well performance (US20170114617A1), used as standard kit for reserves estimation and type well construction for unconventional resources.
Sr. Reservoir Engineer, Planning Budget & Reserves
Maintained evergreen portfolio of cases that categorize exploration & exploitation investment opportunities, acting as liaison between Corporate Strategic Planning and the Project Asset Teams. Managed the schedule, milestones, and interaction between engineering departments to meet corporate deadlines. Provided expertise in risking methods and created processes and tools to increase ease of biannual updates and reduce errors.Performed multi-year look backs on actual drilling results in comparison to AFE estimates. Provided strategic insights by identifying overlaying trends in well results and creating a classification system of new drill “types” to allow management to promote projects that align with the Division’s strengths.Executed technical data analysis using both Spotfire and Excel to solve specific problems and answer a variety of questions, enabling management to leverage data-driven insights when making business decisions.Created more efficient workflows and design data-related automation processes and solutions to reduce manual work load on colleagues (such as data lookup, i.e., well records, and related data entry). Used analytics software to build visualizations of large, sometimes overwhelming, amounts of operational, production, and accounting data, allowing asset teams to quickly answers questions without crawling through database records.Challenged the status quo by investigating and evaluating non-obvious (and sometimes obvious) alternatives to current "best practice", leading the way for change when the evaluation showed change is warranted.
Reservoir Engineer
Responsible for East Texas tight gas plays, as well as exploration work in Eagle Ford shale. Performed competitor analysis, volumetric & material balance calculations, production data analysis, RTA, PTA, and linear flow analysis.Managed the AFE process for both vertical and horizontal riglines. Authored reservoir summaries on AFEs to justify the economics of projects, and was responsible for ensuring AFEs were completed on schedule before spud. Provided capital updates and cost tracking relative to Budget.Created and maintained a budget for assigned fields. Worked with G&G and Land to identify & obtain regulatory approval for, respectively, well locations. Built cases for budget proposal and presented asset evaluations to management.Mentored rotational reservoir engineers to assist them in maximum skill development and career growth.
Drilling Engineer
Designed & planned exploration and development wells. Researched & compiled offset data to inform drilling operations of possible problems and challenges. Decided course of action when unforeseen issues occurred during drilling.Spent 3 months in the field observing drilling operations first hand
