Working in the Service Provider Line of Business, Remote Access Platform Division, on the next Cisco IOS software release 12.1(3)T for the AS5800 access server. The AS5800 consists of a Cisco router, and a number of feature boards, which contain a large number of DSP-based digital modems, voice over IP DSPs, or trunk E1/T1/T3 ports. Involved very large scale software development and extensive collaboration with teams based primarily in San Jose, USA. Left after six months, as was tired of just bug-fixing and not doing new product development. However left with an immense amount of knowledge and experience of software engineering in the large.

Lived in Sano Thimi, Nepal, where I worked as a volunteer English-language teacher at the Child Nature Boarding School, teaching grades 2, 3, 4 and 5 for six months.This was followed by an extensive six month trip through India, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Laos and Singapore, which provided a wonderful exposure and appreciation of Asian cultures.

Member of the CAP research program. Was focussed on writing system software for parallel supercomputers. The program was funded by Fujitsu, Japan, and often involved Fujitsu supercomputer hardware.Highlights include:- Fast implementation of MPI standard for AP1000, AP1000+ and AP3000 supercomputers.- Port of Linux to the UltraSPARC processor.- FDDI device driver using a part of the FreeBSD code ported to CellOS.- Modifications to CellOS (operating system for AP1000/AP1000+) to boast performance.- Two three-month trips to Fujitsu Laboratories, in Kawasaki, Japan, to work with engineers on achieving high performance with MPI implementations.- Worked under commercial contract to develop MPI for AP3000.- A number of publications and presentations at conferences.
