About David Long, Phd Teaching Systems Thinking

After transitioning from nearly 25 years in the Air Force as an acquisition officer with experience throughout all phases of system development and operations, I am now supporting government programs from a defense contractor role. I have been a program manager, started a sensor integration laboratory that is focused on improving open systems architecting applications, and teaming with a government group to stand up an Open Systems Architecture Management Office. In my current role as a professor of systems engineering at the Air Force Institute of Technology, I focus on educating systems engineers to become lead and chief engineers for the DoD and Air Force. In addition, I support my company by developing new customers for systems engineering and human machine teaming.Research Interests: Understanding the role of system architecture in complex systems. Developed the Compatibility Assessment Method (CAM) to allow program managers a structured screening tool to determine if proposed subsystem upgrades are compatible with the parent system. This research has been primarily applied to military acquisition. I am also interested in applying system architecture research to commercial products, health care services, aviation, and transportation systems.Determining interactions between humans and systems. Worked with graduate students to understand what should be automated instead of automating what can be automated. Devised operational architectures for single operators to manage multiple unmanned aircraft systems. My focus has been on the product development phase of the product life cycle, but all phases from concepts to reuse or re-purposing are intertwined in the associated systems engineering processes.Specialties: Government acquisitionProduct developmentChange managementEngineering managementFlight testingOperational and depot maintenanceSystems integrationLogistics chain management
