About David Snowdon

I'm someone who continually demonstrates that he can build real systems and make them work, starting from scratch; someone with the vision required to steer the ship, and with the attention to detail required to make plans happen. I'm happy working on my own or leading/mentoring, but happiest working with an amazing team.I founded Metamako, a company building and selling network hardware, and the software to run them. Manufactured in Australia, these devices were the world's fastest, quickly transforming the way financial networks are built worldwide. With clients including the ASX and Eurex, as well as most of the world's top trading firms, I feel like we "won". The company grew to 60 people, and I was responsible for all things technical including inception and delivery of our world class technology. I was also one of three board members. We were acquired by Silicon Valley-based Arista Networks in 2018, and continue to deliver value and to truly innovate in networking technology. Specialties: Systems architecture, embedded systems implementation, financial market latency optimisation, operating systems, circuit board design, FPGA based systems, system optimisation, algorithmic trading systems latency optimisation, asm, C, C++, Python, solar power systems, mechanical systems, project management, startup businesses, mentoring

Timebeat are doing innovative things in the clock synchronisation space. I've joined the board to leverage my experience scaling both the technology and the business.
  • Mp Space
    Advisor
Mp Space Apr 2024 - Present
MP Space are making space useful -- engineering components for a space vehicles in a world where access to space is much more ubiquitous.
  • Career Break
    Gap Year
Career Break Sep 2023 - Present
After levelling up the world's financial networks, I'm taking a bit of time out to decompress, tinker, and work out what's next. Let me know if you've got ideas!
  • Arista Networks
    Director, Engineering
    Arista Networks Sep 2018 - Sep 2023
    Santa Clara, California, Us
Arista Networks acquired Metamako in September, 2018, and with it I've joined the team to continue our work building the best possible network products for the finance industry and beyond.
  • Metamako
    Founder, Cto, Board Member
    Metamako May 2013 - Sep 2018
    Sydney, Nsw, Au
I co-founded Metamako in May 2013. Since then, the team have built a portfolio of industry-leading products in the networking space, dominating the latency-sensitive trading space. They include MetaConnect (a high-performance layer 1 switch), MetaMux (a flexible hybrid layer 1 and FPGA enabled switch) and MetaApp (a similar platform more targetted toward flexible FPGA-based application deployment).Metamako has revolutionised "state-of-the-art" in financial networks. My contribution spans a wide variety of roles across the company, from team leadership through to product architecture through to business process development through to supply chain planning IT and sales. Together with the team, Metamako grew into a dominant player in the low latency networking space, and was acquired by Arista Networks in September, 2018.
  • Zeptonics
    Principal
    Zeptonics Apr 2011 - Feb 2013
Zeptonics was a small startup working on some exciting financial technology. I first worked designing and developing two hardware products -- ZeptoMux and ZeptoLink -- from the ground up starting with the EDA libraries, moving through schematic design, guiding the layout and mechanical design, software design, logic and through to production management and sales. The ZeptoMux is an FPGA-based device and acted as the lowest-latency 10G network switch at the time of introduction (130 ns). The ZeptoLink was the world's fastest method of dynamically mapping ports to one another (including one to many) with a 5 ns latency. I managed a team of people who have developed the software, tested and productised the device. I have worked on various other systems in the Zeptonics portfolio, including FPGA-based systems, hybrid hardware-software solutions, and performance-oriented software. All of these have had HFT and other finance applications and made a significant difference to our customers' performance/revenue.
  • Zomojo
    Senior Software And Hardware Engineer
    Zomojo Nov 2009 - Apr 2011
    Au
I worked on the efficiency and effectiveness of Zomojo's trading systems.
  • Unsw Solar Racing Team
    Chief Electrical Engineer
    Unsw Solar Racing Team 2002 - 2009
    Sydney, Nsw, Au
Developed the electrical systems for several generations of solar car. This included: - developing a microcontroller platform, network protocol (based on CAN), and software infrastructure for implementing telemetry and control. - developing remote logging infrastructure (based on StrongARM SA1100 and PXA255) - developing maximum power point tracker control hardware and software, involving an FPGA/CPLD for accurate timing of the synchronous rectification and soft-switching components, and a nested control architecture. - developed CAN connectivity for Tritium Gold controller (TI DSP) - developed various telemetry nodes which connect to the CAN infrastructure to transfer data (GPS, temperature, wireless tyre pressure, switching nodes for indicators, driver controls, DCDC converter for power, mini MPPTs for telemetry power, "head" node for transferring data back to a support car, etc). - closely involved with the development of Sunswift 2.3, Sunswift 2.4, Sunswift 3 and Sunswift 4, eventually winning the silicon class in 2009. - Writing strategy software and running strategy for the World Solar Challenge in 2001, 2005, 2009. - Race team member for 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2009. Observer for 2007, 2011. - breaking the Guiness World Record for the fastest solar powered car in early 2011.
