Senior Software Engineer (Mobile Applications)
Most recent role: Senior Android Engineer, Support Engineering Team.Team areas of responsibility included help pages, live support agent chat, and support tooling. Major projects included:--- Server-driven UI Platform ---For this project, I was the co-author and Lead Android Engineer on a Server-Driven UI Platform. The platform allowed backend developers to construct UI from small, modular building blocks. It had a composable structure that allowed server-driven layouts to be embedded anywhere in the app.It was used across the organization for purposes included but not limited to:► User help pages► In-app promotions & banners► Dynamic messaging & cards► Form-based data collectionThe Support Engineering team used our framework to render help pages. It plugged into a backend CMS, allowing non-technical support agents to edit the content on the fly. This system allowed the content and layout of the help pages to be changed without the need to recompile the app, allowing support to be more nimble in its response to issues. The framework was soon adopted by several other feature teams at Lyft. We were responsible for maintaining and scaling the framework as it was adapted to new use cases. We performed several upgrades, including a major migration to Jetpack Compose.--- Support Chat ---For this project, I designed, developed and deployed an embedded chat application in the Lyft Android apps. This applcation allowed users to chat with support agents via a text interface. This interface included specialized functions, including image upload, session management, deep links, badges and notifications. This was the first Android feature at Lyft to use a unidirectional data flow design pattern. Inspired by frameworks such as Redux, it used a control loop to consume messages, update the program state and trigger side-effects in a predictable, stepwise fashion. The design was later ported to iOS.
Android Application Engineer
Android application engineer and technical consultant for DramaFever, a NYC-based company which delivered on-demand streaming video of documentaries, movies, and TV shows. It was later acquired by Warner Bros.Dramafever's product line included a website, mobile apps (Android / iOS), and Smart TV apps (Google TV / Samsung TV / Roku). At the time, the company held licensing deals with several Korean broadcasting companies. Dramefever also produced subtitles for shows using in-house proprietary software. An important aspect of the DramaFever workplace was the remote team environment. With engineers spread across several states, the team relied on chat applications and video conferencing for communication. This was a fairly unique arrangement pre-pandemic and gave me early exposure to this working style. Some projects I worked on included:--- Dramafever AndroidApp ---Built an offline download feature incorporating DRM technology and data encryption. Introduced asynchronous collections (RxJava) to the codebase. Worked on native Chromecast support.--- Shudder Android App ---Lead Android developer for a streaming video app, primarily horror- and thriller-themed content. This project was contracted to Dramafever by AMC.This app used an early version of the Exoplayer video player, which has now been integrated into the Jetpack Media3 common library. The design included custom UI widgets including a rolodex-style picker with centerline snapping behavior.
Mobile Sdk Engineer
Developer at Artisan Mobile, a Philadelphia-area startup with a focus on A/B testing, analytics and customer experience management.I worked on the Artisan SDK for Android, a development toolkit for A/B testing in mobile applications. The toolkit used an "aspect-oriented programming" extension of the JDK, called AspectJ, to inject code at various points in program execution. The injected code was used to record analytics data and run A/B tests without modifying the original source code.A/B tests were server-driven: the backend sent a changeset to the client, and the client would modify the UI at runtime. User actions for the A and B versions of the test were automatically recorded so that they could be analyzed later.Software development methodology at Artisan was highly collaborative and followed agile practices, including daily scums, sprint planning and retrospectives, and intensive code review. The company utilized rapid prototyping, iterative development and unit testing to drive continuous improvements in the product.
Consultant / Mobile Software Developer
Chariot Solutions is a mid-sized software consulting firm with a strong reputation in the Philadelphia area. As a member of the mobile development team, my responsibilities included:► Application Development (Android/iOS/mobile web)► Consultant (training/mentoring/team management)► Software tooling (open-source contributions, internal tools)► Research & Development (estimations, prototypes)
Mobile Software Developer
Independent consulting and mobile application development services. Developed products for several clients across multiple platforms (Android, iOS).
