I am an internationally recognised leader in sustainability, environmental management and conservation biology, with over 35 years of professional and business experience. As an independent sustainability expert since the beginning of 2013, I provide specialist advisory services to major projects and organisations on how to develop and implement effective and credible sustainability programmes. My particular focus is on sport and major events. I led the award-winning sustainability programme of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, widely recognised as the most sustainable Games in modern Olympic history. This involved integrating sustainability into all aspects of a large and continually changing organisation, facing major time, logistical and financial constraints, whilst operating under intense media and political scrutiny.I have strong capabilities in strategic policy, governance and programme development and delivery; sustainability management systems (notably ISO 20121); issues and risk management; monitoring and assurance; reporting; stakeholder engagement and communications.I have extensive experience in dealing with decision makers and opinion formers among politicians, public authorities, businesses, specialist organisations and the media. I have given numerous public presentations and media interviews, written articles and reports, managed critical stakeholder relations and chaired several technical and advisory committees on topics ranging from carbon reporting and waste management to biodiversity, food and impact evaluation.Previous to my Olympic and major event career, I worked in the golf sector (1990 – 2003), specialising in the environmental aspects of golf course development and management. My original training and research was in conservation biology. I am a Fellow and founder member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (the professional body for ecologists). I became a Chartered Environmentalist in 2005.

I was responsible for developing a culture of sustainability across the organisation and integrating sustainability into LOCOG’s policies, procedures and processes. These had to be sufficiently robust to cope with the continual change as the organisation grew from an SME start-up to a major corporation during its seven year lifetime.I provided direct support and advice to other Departments and all Directors and the CEO and Chairman. I served on the Deal Approval Group, a Director-level committee that signed-off all major commercial deals. As Head of Sustainability at LOCOG I managed a team which at its peak comprised 20 staff and secondees and 14 volunteers.I was the official LOCOG spokesperson on sustainability issues and had frequent dealings with the media. I conducted numerous interviews with domestic and international TV, radio, print and on-line channels. I was also a frequent speaker at major conferences and seminars. On several occasions I presented evidence to the London Assembly Environment Committee and provided written responses to a range of Mayoral and Parliamentary Questions.Stakeholder engagement was a key part of my role. I managed the critical relationship between LOCOG and the independent Commission for a Sustainable London 2012, the official assurance body reviewing our work. I was the LOCOG representative on the London 2012 Sustainability Group, a programme-wide forum for delivery partners co-chaired by officials from the Mayor’s Office and central government (Defra). I also represented LOCOG on the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Sport and Environment Commission and contributed to the IOC’s Transfer of Knowledge programme for future host cities.
