Joint Logistics Command supports Australian Defence Force operations and activities in Australia and globally. The Command’s workforce comprised 1400 military and Australian Public Service staff, and through Australian and international industry partners, a very large contracted workforce. Responsible to deliver a broad range of services, including warehousing and distribution, material maintenance, end-to-end fuel supply, explosive ordnance storage and distribution, assurance of supply chain performance, explosive ordnance and radiation safety. Dually appointed as the senior military logistics advisor to the Chief of the Defence Force and Secretary for Defence. Set Defence’s strategic logistics direction through policy and concept development, routinely advised Ministers and Defence’s senior leadership, and monitored the overall performance of Defence’s logistics systems and supply chain.Key responsibilities include oversight of the planning and delivery of logistics support for operations and major exercises; evaluating logistic support for current and future capabilities; defining, implementing and monitoring Defence’s logistic processes, systems and performance; and influencing the development of fit-for-purpose Logistics Information Systems. Specific appointments include Head Defence Fuel Supply Chain; Competent Authority for Defence Explosive Ordnance; and Co-Chair of Defence and State and Territory Consultative Forums.

Only Australian appointed to this significant role in the peak NATO headquarters in Afghanistan. Upon a re-structure of Australian national command arrangements in the Greater Middle East Region, I was appointed also as Commander Joint Task Force 636. Planned and executed sustainment support to all Coalition forces within Afghanistan, while also accountable to deliver key aspects of Security Force Assistance to the Afghanistan National Defense and Security Forces. Developed and implemented strategic and operational systems in logistics, maintenance, medical support, facilities management and communications. Mentored Afghan counterparts at Deputy Ministerial level, and led negotiations with Afghanistan’s Government on a diverse range of strategically-important issues.Responsible to maintain a highly professional, effective and ethical Australian military contribution. Ensured highest quality force protection and enabling support within a dynamic and dangerous environment. In partnership with the Australian Ambassador, safeguarded and promoted Australian National interests.

Commanded a Brigade of 3500 full-time and part-time personnel grouped into nine field-deployable business units. These units provided integrated and specialised services, including transportation (road, maritime and aerial delivery); stevedoring; warehousing and distribution of stocks (including bulk fuel, explosive ordnance and foodstuffs); contract management services; military police and communications support. In late 2011, the Brigade assumed full responsibility for providing Army's combat health capabilities, including primary health care, paramedic support, road and areo-medical evacuation, trauma care, general and specialist surgical services, diagnostics, psychology and allied health services.

Management of the serious and sensitive issues impacting on Army was the most demanding aspect of this role. I gained extensive leadership and management experience in a wide range of roles during the first 25 years of my military service. With a primary specialisation in logistics developed through practical experience, military and civilian professional development and tertiary study, I also gained expertise in driving cultural and organisational change, human resource management, reputation management, public communication and managing relations with Ministers, Government and regulatory agencies. Highlights include my roles as Director Logistics - Army, Chief of Plans (Logistics) Multi-National Force - Iraq, Director Personnel Operations - Army, Commanding Officer 1st Combat Service Support Battalion and the Directorate of Officer Career Management - Army. I completed long-term schooling at the Centre for Defence & Strategic Studies, the Army Command & Staff College and the British Army's School of Logistics.
