I served as an Intern at the Union facility in Rahway, NJ.The Union Facility uses a PC based control system to maintain a safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly production of electricity for a large portion of southern New Jersey. The control system, made by Citect, was added while I was working at the plant. I spent a lot of time with each control room operator, using my computer skills to ensure a smooth transition from the original Bailey control system to the new Citect control system.Due to the unique working schedule at the Union facility, I worked with four rotating crews. As a result, my responsibilities in the field changed on a daily basis. In general, I installed new machinery and maintained existing equipment. This experience allowed me to establish a close relationship with nearly every employee at the facility.RESPONSIBILITIES:• Assisted control room operators: monitored a PC based control system that is used to control the combustion of municipal solid waste in order to generate electricity, created and analyzed stack emission trends, recorded and plotted data taken from plant water chemistry tests, completed hot work permits and confined space permits • Assisted auxiliary operators: performed routine walk down inspections, repaired/replaced plant equipment, assisted in the shut down/start-up process during boiler outagesPROJECTS: • Assisted in the conversion from the original Bailey DCS to the new PC based control system (Citect)• Created a schematic used to determine the square footage of refractory tiles necessary for the Low-NOx project • Helped transfer the safety lockout database from a desktop computer to a secure online database that can be accessed by all personal from any computer that is connected to the network• Created an inventory of all of the blue prints and P&IDs located on site
